Short answer: By studying. But I suppose you want details. I'm writing a
book "What You May Not Know about Jhana and Samadhi",
containing what you want for samadhi, vipassana, samatha, jhana and
nimitta. As for peta and vihara, I think it's quite easy to notice the
difference between common usage now, which is based on commentaries, and
the usage in the Suttas.
