Dear Sister Dīpa,

maybe like this:

*Tena kho pana samayena bhikkhū sarabhaññe kukkuccāyanti.*
> At that time the monks, while chanting with intonation (sara-bhaṇññe),
> were overcome by remorse.


...but the Buddha allowed them to do so eventually.

In the passage prior to this the Buddha had just ordered the monks not to
sing, that's why they felt overcome by remorse when
their chanting carried some "intonation" (*sarena*).

*Na, bhikkhave, āyatakena gītassarena dhammo gāyitabbo.*
> In the future, o monks, you should not sing the Dhamma with a *singing *
> intonation.
