Y.P. 22. apissu, and then.

"Apissu, bhikkhave, Vipassi.m Bhagavanta.m... imaa anacchariyaa
gaathaa pa.tipha.msu." [D.ii,36] And then, brethren, to Vipassii the
Exalted One, were revealed, on the spur of the moment, these simple
verses

---------

N: PTS has: these verses unheard of before.

----------

23. apissuda.m, so much so.

(a) "Apissuda.m parito gaamesu manussaa evam aaha.msu..." [D.ii,264]
So much so, that in the villages round about, folk were saying...

Y.P.: (b) "Aayasmato Samiddhissa aviduure mahanta.m bhaya-bherava-
saddam akaasi, apissuda.m pa.thavii ma~n~ne udriiyatii ti." [S.i,119]
He made a tremendous noise, appalling and terrible, so that you would
think the very earth were splitting open.

-------

N: This is part of a text: (Then Maara, the evil one, discerning the
thoughts) of the venerable Samiddhi, drew near and when he was close
by (aviduure) he made a tremendous noise...

----

Y.P.: 25. api nu is used as an interrogative

"Aasaadiya* edisa.m jana.m,
Aggi.m pajjalita.m va li`ngiya,
Ga.nhiya-m**-aasivisa.m viya,
Api nu sotthi siyaa? Khamehi no." [Thig.v.398]

Will there be safety for a man who has offended such a person, has
clasped blazing fire to his bosom, and has handled a poisonous snake?
Forgive me.

-----

N: viya indicates a simile: Will there be safety for a man who has
offended such a person; will there be safety for a man who is like
someone who has clasped a blazing fire to his bossom and handled a
poisonous snake?
Forgive me.

28. abbhumme, alas! it is terrible!

(a) "Saa... sappassa nikkhamanokaasa.m katvaa: "Abbhumme!! Anto
sappo"ti vii.na.m cha.d.detvaa palaayi." [Com.A.442]

YP: "She... got the chance of going out of snake(need to check
context): "Alas!! Snake inside.", threw away the lute and fled.

-------

N: This is an option: sappassa nikkhamanokaasa.m katvaa: she created
the opportunity for the snake to depart.

She gave the snake an opportunity to depart saying: It is terrible
that there is a snake inside. She threw away the lute and he (the
snake) fled.

-----------

Nina.
