(not even a member of the Commonwealth!) back in 1949. I repeat: not
an "autonomous region" but a completely independent state, like
France, Germany of Italy.

Erh, have you done much travelling in the USA, Piotr? You shouldn't
be so surprised. Gerry's ideas of European geography is rather the
standard view of most Americans.
