Thanks Miguel.  I knew that Great Britain was an island consisting of England, Scotland and Wales.  About the United Kingdom, I'm surprised that it only includes a portion of Ireland (Northern) -- did South Ireland secede?  Is it now a country unto it's own?

Yes: Great Britain is an island, consisting of England, Wales and
Scotland.  The United Kingdom is a state, consisting of the island of
Great Britain with a number of smaller neighbouring islands, (included
within England (e.g.  Wight), Wales (e.g. Anglesey) or Scotland
(lots)), a portion of the island of Ireland ("Northern Ireland"), and
the islands of Jersey, Guernsey (the Channel Islands) and the Isle of
Man.
