Subject: Re: [nostratic] BOMHARD'S "RESPONSE"

What other Nostratic list?  Isn't this list the Nostratic list...

Also, you said Bomhard had a six vowel system when he actually has three phonemic vowels (six reflecting pairs of allophones for each), which you also have, so why did you criticize him for his vowels?

First, there is another Nostratic list at

Nostratic@...

Second, Bomhard uses the allophones of his primary trio to create more vocalic correspondences in the daughter languages, than are, in my opinion, unjustified.

For example, Bomhard asserts that his Nostratic *a is seen in Dravidian *a; the allophone, Nostratic *6 in Dravidian *e. This means that any given root in Nostratic *a has two chances at a cognate in Dravidian: one in *a and one in *e. This hopelessly muddles the roots.

If you will go through all the roots I have reconstructed for Nostratic in *CaC, you will see that there is no necessity to have two Dravidian responses: *CaC suffices to cover all legitimate cognates.
