16. kafli

Gunnar Hlífarson situr nú í Örnólfsdal og hefir húsað vel. 

Gunnar Hlifarson stays now in Ornofsdale and has well furnished with houses.

Hann hafði selför og var jafnan mannfátt heima.

He kept cattle in a shed on a mountain pasture and was equally short of people at home.

Jófríður dóttir Gunnars átti sér tjald úti því að henni þótti það ódauflegra.

Gunnar's daughter Jofridr herself owned a tent outside because it seemed to her not dull.

Einn dag ber svo til að Þóroddur son Tungu-Odds ríður í Þverárhlíð. 

One day it so happened that Thoroddr, Odd-Tongue's son, rides to Thervahlid (Tributary-river-place). 

Hann kemur í Örnólfsdal um farinn veg og gengur inn í tjaldið til Jófríðar. 

He arrives in Ornofsdale during a journey and goes in the tent to to Jofridur.

Hún heilsar honum vel. 

She greets him well.

Hann sest niður hjá henni og taka þau tal sín á milli og í því kemur sveinn frá selinu og biður Jófríði taka ofan klyfjar með sér. 

He sits himself down beside her and they begin to talk between them and at that moment a boy arrives from the hut and asks Jofrid to take down packs (Z. shows this as a verb, not a noun, but the next sentence indicates that the word can be a noun) with him.

Þóroddur fer til og tekur ofan klyfjarnar en sveinninn fer síðan í brott og kemur til sels.

Thoroddr goes there and takes down the packs and the boy then goes away and arrives at (the) hut.

Gunnar spyr hví honum yrði nú svo fljótt. 

Gunnar asks him why (he) was so fast.

Hann svarar engu.

He doesn't answer (or more literally, "He answers nothing.")

Gunnar spurði: "Sástu nokkuð til tíðinda?"

Gunnar asked: "Did you see something to tell about?"

"Alls eigi," kvað sveinninn.

"Not at all," the boy said.

"Nei," sagði Gunnar, "þannig ertu í bragði sem nokkuð hafi þér fyrir augu borið það sem þér þykir umræðu vert og seg mér ef svo er. 

"No," said Gunnar, "You look as if something has come before your eyes, that (which) seems to you worthy talk, and tell me if it is so.    (Z. bragð 4 -- þannig ertu í bragði sem, thou lookest as if)  (Z. bera II 2)

Eða er nokkuð manna komið til bæjarins?"

Has some man come to the farm?"

"Engan sá eg kominn," sagði sveinninn.

"I saw no one came," said the boy.

"Þú munt nú segja verða," sagði Gunnar og tók sviga einn mikinn og ætlar að berja piltinn með.

"You would now say (not sure how "verða" works here)," said Gunnar and took a large switch and intends to beat the boy with (it).

Eigi fékk hann af honum heldur en áður.

He didn't get from him more than before. 

Eftir það fékk Gunnar sér hest og hleypur á bak og ríður skyndilega ofan til veturhúsa með hlíðinni.

After that, Gunnar went to his horse and hops on and rides speedily down to (the) winter houses by the mountainside.

Jófríður getur að líta ferð föður síns og sagði Þóroddi og biður hann ríða brott "vildi eg gjarna að eigi hlytist illt af mér."

Jofridr sees his father's journey and told Thoroddr and asks him (to) ride away "I wanted willingly to not result ill to me."   (Z. geta 3)

Þóroddur segist munu bráðlega ríða.

Thoroddr says for himself (that he) will ride at once.

Gunnar ber fljótt að og hleypur af baki, gengur þegar inn í tjaldið. 

Gunnar conveys quickly to (there) and hops off (his) horse, (and) at once goes inside the tent.

Þóroddur heilsar honum vel en Gunnar tók kveðju hans og spurði síðan hví hann væri þar kominn.

Thoroddr greats him well, and Gunnar received his welcome and then hasked why he had come there.

Þóroddur sagði að svo bar til um ferðir hans "og vil eg þó eigi gera þetta til fjandskapar við þig. 

Thoroddr said that that so to concerning his journey "And I will not yet do this for enmity against you.

En vita vil eg hverju þú vilt svara mér ef eg bið Jófríðar dóttur þinnar."

But I certainly want that, you would answer me if I ask for your daughter Jofridar (in marriage)."

Gunnar svarar: "Eigi mun eg gifta þér dóttur mína við þessa meðferðina. 

Gunnar answers: "I will not give you my daughter in marriage with this misbehavior ("these misbehaviors" in OI).

Hefir nú og í odda staðist með oss um hríð."

(There) has now also (been the case that) we have been at odds a while."
