Þeir kváðust engi segja kunna önnur en þau að sá maður var einn kominn vestan úr Breiðafirði
They declared-of-themselves to be-able-to say no (tidings, refers back to tíðindi in previous sentence) other than those, that that man (person) was (had) alone come from-the-west out-of Breiðafjörðr

that should-know-how (?) to answer Tungu-Oddr “and his sound and voice like a bull roared.”

Hún kvað það engi tíðindi þótt honum væri svarað sem öðrum manni en kvað þó það hafa gerst að tíðindum að eigi væri líklegra til.
She declared that (to be) no tidings considering that (it) were answered by (?) him as by (?) another person (man) but declared still that to have happened of tidings that were not more likely.

"Var þar og bardagi," sögðu þeir, "og féllu fimm menn alls en margir urðu sárir."
“(There) was there also a battle,” they said, “and five men fell (died) in-all but many became (ie were) wounded.”

En áður gátu þeir þess að engu.
But previously they mentioned (geta, Z2) that to no-one.

Now the-assembly passes and happens there nothing of tidings (report). But (And) when those in-laws come home west they change (skipta, Z3) (their) abode.

Fer Gunnar í Örnólfsdal en Hersteinn tekur Gunnarsstaði.
Gunnarr goes to Örnólfsdalr (Örnólfr’s-Dale) but (and) Hersteinn takes Gunnarsstaðir (Gunnarr’s-steads).

Eftir þetta lætur Gunnar færa til sín vestan við þann allan sem Örn austmaður hafði átt og flytja heim í Örnólfsdal.
After this Gunnarr causes to deliver to him from-the-west (with?) all those (men, or maybe possessions?) whom Örn (the) Norwegian (east-man) had had and to convey (them) home to Örnólfsdalr.

He receives (them) after-that and builds up the-farmstead for a second time because Gunnarr was of all men (persons) most-skilful.

He was also a man-of-great-accomplishments concerning everything and of men (the) best skilled-in-arms and the most manly in everything.

14. kafli
Chapter 14.

Nú líða stundir fram allt til þess að menn ríða til þings. Er nú mikill viðbúnaður í héruðunum.
Now time passes forward (goes on) completely to that (point) that men (persons) ride to (the) assembly. (There) is now great preparation in the districts.

Ríða nú hvorirtveggju ákafa fjölmennir.
Now each-of-two (ie both) very (ákafa) great-crowds-of-people ride.

And when they, Þórðr ‘Roarer’ (and co) comes to Gunnarsstaðir, Hersteinn is sick and is not able to go to (the) assembly.

Selur hann nú öðrum í hendur sakirnar. Eftir voru hjá honum þrír tigir manna.
He now hands-over the-suits to others into (their) hands (care). Thirty men (three-tens of men) were (stayed) behind (eptir, iii.2) alongside him.

Now Þórðr rides to (the) assembly. He gathers to him his friends and kinsmen and comes early to (the) assembly.

En þingið var þá undir Ármannsfelli. Og svo sem flokkar koma hefir Þórður liðsdrátt mikinn.
But (And) the-assembly was then under Ármannsfell. And so as bodies-of-men come Þórðr has a great assembling-of-troops.

Nú er sén ferð Tungu-Odds. Ríður Þórður þá í mót honum og vill eigi að hann nái þinghelginni.
Now is seen (the) journey of Tungu-Oddr. Þórðr rides then to a meeting with (ie to meet) him and wants not that he (Tungu-Oddr) reaches the-assembly-confines.

Oddur ríður með þremur hundruðum manna. Þeir Þórður verja þingið og slær þá þegar í bardaga.
Oddr rides with three hundreds of men. They, Þórðr (and co) defend the-assembly and (it) turns (slá i e-t, Z7) at-once into a battle.

Shortly takes-place a slaughter (lit: a fall of men) but (and) very-many became (ie were) wounded.. Six men fell by means of Oddr (or from among Oddr’s troops?) because Þórðr was much more numbered-with-men (people).
