86. kafli - Af Bolla

Bolli and his companions came to Modruvoll to Gudmundr the powerful.

He goes to meet them with all kindness, and he was the gladdest.

Þar sátu þeir hálfan mánuð í góðum fagnaði.

They stayed there a half month in good cheer.

Then Gudmundr said to Bolli: “What has happened concerning that, has discord arisen between Thorstein and you (more literally “between you two, Thorstein (and you)”)?

Bolli said little (til haft?) concerning that and took up another subject.

Guðmundur mælti: "Hverja leið ætlar þú aftur að ríða?"

Gudmundr said: “Which route do you intend to ride along?”

"Hina sömu," svarar Bolli.

“The same,” answers Bolli.

Guðmundur mælti: "Letja vil eg yður þess því að mér er svo sagt að þið Þorsteinn hafið skilið fálega.

Gudmundr said: “I want to dissuade you (plural) of that because it is so told me that you two have parted company coldly.

Rather, stay here with me and ride south in (the) spring and let’s then let this case be decided.”

Bolli lést eigi mundu bregða ferðinni fyrir hót þeirra "en það hugði eg þá er Helgi fólið lét sem heimsklegast og mælti hvert óorðan að öðru við oss og vildi hafa spjótið konungsnaut úr hendi mér fyrir einn heyvöndul að eg skyldi freista að hann fengi ömbun orða sinna.

Bolli was not dissuaded (?) (that he) would deviate from the journey because of their threat “and/but I intended that when the fool Helgi made as if the most foolish and said every bad language that next with us and wanted to have the “king’s gift” spear out of my hand for a wisp of hay and I should try that he would get a reward for his word.

Hefi eg og annað ætlað fyrir spjótinu að eg mundi heldur gefa þér og þar með gullhringinn þann er stólkonungurinn gaf mér.

I have also secondly intended for the spear that I would rather give (it) to you and along with it the gold ring, the one which the enthroned king gave me.

Hygg eg nú að gripirnir séu betur niður komnir en þá að Helgi hefði þá."

I intend now that the treasures would be better become (?) than when that Helgi then had.”

Gudmundr thanked him for these gifts and said: “Here smaller gifts will come in exchange for what is worthy.”

Guðmundur gaf Bolla skjöld gulllagðan og gullhring og skikkju.

Gudmundr gave Bolli a gold laced shield and a gold ring and a cloak.

It was in it (feminine, referring to the shirt) the most expensive cloth and all adorned there which both thought.

Allir voru gripirnir mjög ágætir.

All were very excellent treasures.

Þá mælti Guðmundur: "Illa þykir mér þú gera Bolli er þú vilt ríða um Svarfaðardal."

Then Gudmundr said: “It think it’s poor (what) you do, Bolli, when you wanted to ride across Svarfardale.”

Bolli segir það ekki skaða munu.

Bolli says it will do no harm.

Riðu þeir í brott og skilja þeir Guðmundur við hinum mestum kærleikum.

They rode away and they, Gudmundr (and Bolli), part with the highest regard (for each other).

Þeir Bolli ríða nú veg sinn út um Galmarströnd.

They, Bolli (and his companions), now ride on their way out across Galmarstrand.

During the evening, they arrive at the villiage which is called Krossum.

Þar bjó sá maður er Óttar hét.

The man who was named Ottar lived there.

Hann stóð úti.

He was standing outside.  (Assuming that the past tense can be translated as the past progressive.)

Hann var sköllóttur og í skinnstakki.

He was bald and in (i.e., wearing) a fur cloak.

Óttar kvaddi þá vel og bauð þeim þar að vera.

Ottar greeted them well and invited them to stay there.

Það þiggja þeir.

They accepted it (i.e., the invitation).

Good hospitality was there and the farmer the most cheerful.

Voru þeir þar um nóttina.

They stayed there for the night.
