Þorkell svarar: "Sástu eigi Beini er hann stóð yfir þér með reidda öxina?

Thorkell answers: “Didn’t you see Beini when he stood over you with his (literally “the”) axe raised in the air?

And was the most critical state because he would sink the axe in your head if I showed myself inclined to something.”    (Z. líklig 1 - gøra sik líkligan til e-s, to show oneself inclined to

76. kafli - Drukknan Þorkels

Thorkel’s Death by Drowning

Skírdag snemmendis um morguninn býst Þorkell til ferðar.

Early in the morning Maundy Thursday, Thorkell got ready to travel.

Þorsteinn latti þess mjög "því að mér líst veður ótrúlegt," sagði hann.

Thorsteinn dissuaded him much from this “because it seems to me undependable weather,” he said.

Þorkell kvað veður duga mundu hið besta "og skaltu nú ekki letja mig frændi því að eg vil heim fyrir páskana.”

Thorkell said (the) weather would suffice best “and you now shall not dissuade me, kinsman, because I want (to go) home before Easter.”

Nú setur Þorkell fram ferjuna og hlóð.

Thorkell now sets forth on his journey and loaded (up his ship).

Thorsteinn immediately unloaded (everything) except as Thorkell loaded and they, his crew members.

Þá mælti Þorkell: "Hættu nú frændi og heft ekki ferð vora.

Then Thorkell said: “Stop now, kinsman, and don’t impede our journey.

Eigi færð þú nú ráðið þessu að sinni.”

Don’t you bring now this advice at this time.”

Thorstein answers: “That to us will now advise which will go worse and will to much procure concerning this voyage.”  (?)

Þorkell bað þá heila hittast.

Thorkell bade them meet again sound.     (Z. hitta 4 - hann bað þá vel fara ok heila h. (meet again safe and sound))

Thorstein now goes home and is very gloomy.

He goes now to (his) sitting room and asks to forget it and it was so done.      (not an exact match, but Z. leggja 15 has: leggjast e-t eigi undir höfuð, not to lay it under one’s pillow, not to neglect or forget it

Griðkonan sá að tárin runnu ofan á hægindið úr augum honum.

The housemaid said that tears ran out of his eyes down upon the pillow.

En litlu síðar kom vindsgnýr mikill á stofuna.

And a little later a great squall of wind hit the sitting room.

Þá mælti Þorsteinn: "Þar megum vér nú heyra gnýja bana Þorkels frænda.”

Then Thorstein said: “We can now hear there a noise of kinsman Thorkell’s death.”

Nú er að segja frá ferð þeirra Þorkels.

Now it is (time) to tell concerning their, Thorkell (and his friends’), journey.

Þeir sigla um daginn út eftir Breiðafirði og voru tíu á skipi.

They sail during the day out along Broad-firth and they were ten (altogether) onboard.

Veðrið tók að hvessa mjög og gerði hinn mesta storm áður létti.

The wind began to sharpen much and it became the biggest storm before it abated.

Þeir sóttu knálega ferðina og voru þeir menn hinir röskustu.

They hardily pursued the journey, and they were the bravest men.

Thorkell had with him the sword “Shinbone,” and it was in (the) gunwale of the ship.

They, Thorkell (et al), sail to where they came to Bear Island.

Sáu menn ferðina af hvorutveggja landinu.

Men saw the trip from each of the two shores.

But when they had arrived there, then a gust hit the sail, and the ship capsized.

Thorkell, and all the the men who were with him, drowned.

Viðuna rak víða um eyjar.

The mast was swept away widely around the island.

Hornstafina rak í þá ey er Stafey heitir síðan.

The corner pillar (of a building) was swept to that island which is since called Staff.

Sköfnungur var festur við innviðuna í ferjunni.

Shinbone (i.e., the sword) was fastened to the ribs of the ferry.

Hann hittist við Sköfnungsey.

It was found at Shinbone Island.
