Og við fortölur Guðrúnar miklaði Bolli fyrir sér fjandskap allan á hendur Kjartani og sakir og vopnaðist síðan skjótt og urðu níu saman.
And with many persuasions Gudrun magnified for Bolli himself all enmity at Kjratan's hands and on account of and then (he) put on his weapons posthaste and (they) became nine altogether.

Voru þeir fimm synir Ósvífurs: Óspakur og Helgi, Vandráður og Torráður, Þórólfur, Bolli hinn sétti, Guðlaugur hinn sjöundi, systurson Ósvífurs og manna vænlegastur.
They were five sons of Osvifr: Ospakr and Helgi, Vandradr and Torradr, Thorolfr, Bolli the sixth, Gudlaugr the seventh, a nephew of Osvifr and a most promising man.

Þar var Oddur og Steinn, synir Þórhöllu málgu.
There was Oddr and Stein, sons of Thorall the Talkative.

Þeir riðu til Svínadals og námu staðar hjá gili því er Hafragil heitir, bundu þar hestana og settust niður.
They rode to Svinadale and halted (or "took up their positions) next to a ravine with is named Hafragil (He-Goat-Gully), tied up there the horses and sat down.

Bolli var hljóður um daginn og lá uppi hjá gilsþreminum.
Bolli was silent during the day and lay up next to the ravine's edge.

En er þeir Kjartan voru komnir suður um Mjósyndi og rýmast tekur dalurinn mælti Kjartan að þeir Þorkell mundu snúa aftur.
When they, Kjartan (and the others), had come south beyond Mjosydndi (Slender-???) and the dale widens, Kjaran said that they, Thorkell (and the other person) would turn back. (Z. rýma 6 - r. tekr dalrinn, the dale widens)

Þorkell kvaðst ríða mundu þar til er þrýtur dalinn.
Thorkell said for himself (that he) would ride there until where the dale comes to an end.

Og þá er þeir komu suður um sel þau er Norðursel heita þá mælti Kjartan til þeirra bræðra að þeir skyldu eigi ríða lengra: "Skal eigi Þórólfur þjófurinn að því hlæja að eg þori eigi að ríða leið mína fámennur."
And when they came south beyond the sheds which are called "Northern-sheds," then Kjartan said to the brothers that they should not ride (any) longer: "The thief Thorolfr will not laugh at that that I (for) the most part not ride (on) the way having few followers." (Z. fámennr, a. having few followers)

Þorkell hvelpur svarar: "Það munum vér nú veita þér að ríða nú eigi lengra.
Thorkell the whelp answers: "We will not help you that, to ride now any longer.

En iðrast munum vér þess ef vér erum eigi við staddir ef þú þarft manna við í dag."
But we will repent of that if we are not present if you needed a man today." (Z. staddr 1 - vera við (or hjá) s., to be present)

Þá mælti Kjartan: "Eigi mun Bolli frændi minn slá banaráðum við mig.
Then Kjartan said: "Bolli my relative will not take into use (?) the planning of my death.

En ef þeir Ósvífurssynir sitja fyrir mér þá er eigi reynt hvorir frá tíðindum eiga að segja þó að eg eigi við nokkurn liðsmun."
And if they, (the) sons of Osvifr, lie in wait for me, then it is not proven who of the two from the news to not say although that I would not have with some odds (in my favor)."

Síðan riðu þeir bræður vestur aftur.
Then they, the brothers, rode back west.

Fall Kjartans
Kjartan's death in battle

Nú ríður Kjartan suður eftir dalnum og þeir þrír saman, Án svarti og Þórarinn.
Now Kjartan rides south from the dale and the three together, (Kjartan,) An the black, and Thorarinn.

Þorkell hét maður er bjó að Hafratindum í Svínadal.
Thorkel was the name of a man that lived at Hafratindum (He-goat-peak) in Svinadale (pig valley).

Þar er nú auðn.
That is now abandoned.

Hann hafði farið til hrossa sinna um daginn og smalasveinn hans með honum.
He had gone on his horse during the day and his shepherd with him.

Þeir sáu hvoratveggju, Laugamenn í fyrirsátinni og þá Kjartan er þeir riðu eftir dalnum þrír saman.
They saw both, the men of Lauga in ambush and then Kjartan when they rode out of the dale, three together.

Þá mælti smalasveinn að þeir mundu snúa til móts við þá Kjartan, kvað þeim það mikið happ ef þeir mættu skirra vandræðum svo miklum sem þá var til stefnt.
Then the shepherd said that they would turn to meet then Kjartan, told them that much good luck if they could prevent trouble so much as then was begun. (Z. mót 4 - til móts við e-n, to meet one) (similar to CV stefna - betr enn til var stefnt, better than it was begun, of luck better than foresight)
