Kjartan svarar: "Það ætlaði eg helst að við mundum halda skipi okkru til
Kjartan answers: “I intend that most-of-all, that we will steer our ship to

Englands því að þangað er nú góð kaupstefna kristnum mönnum. En þó vil eg
England because thither is now a good market (fem nom sg) for Christian persons (men). But nevertheless I want to

Síðan gekk Kálfur á brott en Kjartan til máls við konung og fagnar honum vel.
After-that Kálfr walked away but Kjartan (went) to a speaking with (the) king and greets him well.

Konungur tók honum með blíðu og spurði hvað í tali hefði verið með þeim félögum.
(The) king received him with friendliness and asked what in (the way of) conversation (neut dat sg) had been (occurred) between those comrades (dat pl).

Kjartan segir hvað þeir hefðu helst ætlað en kvað þó það sitt erindi til konungs
Kjartan says what they had most-of-all intended but declared nevertheless his errand to (the) king (to be) that,

to ask for himself permission concerning his journey.

Konungur svarar: "Þann kost mun eg þér gera á því Kjartan að þú farir til Íslands út
(The) king answers: “I will give for you that choice (see göra kost, Z4) on that (basis, condition (?)), Kjartan, that you go out to Iceland

rather than to become here a merchant (cf verða at ormi, to become a snake, under at. Z.iv.1).”

Kjartan kaus heldur að vera með konungi en fara til Íslands og boða þeim trúna,
Kjartan chose rather to be (stay) with (the) king than to go to Iceland and preach (boða, Z1) to them (the Christian) faith,

Konungur segir: "Þetta er bæði kjörið hyggilega og mikilmannlega."
(The) king says: “This is both chosen (kjósa) prudently and magnificently.”

Konungur gaf Kjartani öll klæði nýskorin af skarlati. Sömdu honum þau því að
(The) king gave Kjartan all clothes newly-cut (shaped) from scarlet (cloth). Those (clothes) became (3rd pers pl past tense of sama) him because

það sögðu menn að þeir hafi jafnmiklir menn verið þá er þeir gengu undir mál,
