Well, we may be more than half way through the Laxdaela Saga, but I see the author is still throwing us some zingers....

Þá svarar Kjartan: "Það munuð þér ætla að sá muni eigi einurð til hafa við að ganga er það hefir mælt.
Kjartan then answers: "You would expect that that would have determination to go up against to go which that has spoken. (???)

En hér máttu þann sjá."
But here you are able to see the one."

"Sjá má eg þig," segir konungur, "og eigi smáráðan.
"I am able to see you," says the king, "and not a little while ago (?).

En eigi mun þér þess auðið verða að standa yfir höfuðsvörðum mínum og ærna hefir þú sök til þess þótt þú heitaðist eigi við fleiri konunga inni að brenna fyrir þá sök er þér væri hið betra kennt.
But that will not fall to your lot to have an enemy's head in my power and you have an abundant charge to that although you didn't make threats against more kings to burn (them) inside their homes for that charge is (what) you would be better known. (Z. höfuðsvörðr - head-skin, scalp; standa yfir -svörð-um e-s, to have an enemy's head in one's power)

But over that which I didn't know whether desire accompanied your talk but bravely with gone then (I) shall not take your life for this offence.

Kann og vera að þú haldir því betur trúna sem þú mælir meir í móti henni en aðrir.
Know and be that you hold that better faith as you speak more against it than others.

Kann eg og það að skilja að það mun skipshöfnum skipta að þann dag munu við trú taka er þú lætur ónauðigur skírast.
I know also that to understand that that the ship's crew will shift to that day you will accept the faith when you are baptized unforced (i.e., by your own volition). (Z. skíra - láta skírast, to be baptized)

Þykir mér og á því líkindi að frændur yðrir og vinir muni mjög á það hlýða hvað þér talið fyrir þeim er þér komið út til Íslands.
It seems to me also that is probable that your relatives and friends will very much listen to that what you say before them when you come out to Iceland.

That is also near my anticipation that you, Kjartan, have a better faith when you sail from Norway than when you came here.

Go now in peace and in truce whichever you want of this meeting.

Skal eigi pynda yður til kristni að sinni því að guð mælir svo að hann vill að engi komi nauðigur til hans."
(I) shall not compel you (plural) by brute force to Christianity for the present because God says so that he wants that no one come unwilling to him." (Z. sinn - at sinni, for the present)

The King's speech was praised and even mostly by Christian men. (Z. gøra - g. góðan (mikinn) róm at máli e-s, to cheer (praise) another's speech)

En heiðnir menn mátu við Kjartan að hann skyldi svara sem hann vildi.
And the heathen men left it to Kjartan that he should answer as we wanted.

Þá mælti Kjartan: "Þakka viljum vér yður konungur er þér gefið oss góðan frið og þannig máttu oss mest teygja að taka við trúnni að gefa oss upp stórsakir en mælir til alls í blíðu þar sem þér hafið þann dag allt ráð vort í hendi er þér viljið.
Then Kjartan said: "We wanted to thank you (yður = plural; why plural?), King, when you gave us good peace and there you are able to most entice us to accept the faith to give us up great offences than measure to all in friendliness there as you have that day all our counsel in hand that you wanted.

Og það ætla eg mér að taka því aðeins við trú í Noregi að eg meti lítils Þór hinn næsta vetur er eg kem til Íslands."
And I intend to take only that faith in Norway that I value Thor little the next winter when I came to Iceland."

Then the King says and smiled in reply: "It can be seen in Kjartan's appearance that he thinks to have more trust in his physical strength and weapons rather than whereas is Thor and Odin."

Síðan var slitið þinginu.
Then the assembly was ended.
