Eitt skip átti Brandur hinn örvi son Vermundar Þorgrímssonar.
Brandur the incited(?), son of Vermundar Thorgrimson, owned the first ship
Annað skip átti Hallfreður vandræðaskáld.
Hallfred the troublesome poet owned the second ship.
Þriðja skip áttu bræður tveir.
Two brothers owned the third ship.
Hét annar Bjarni en annar Þórhallur.
One (brother) was named Bjarn and the other Thorhall.
Þeir voru synir Breiðár-Skeggja austan úr Fljótshlíð.
They were sons of Breidar-Skeggja from the east out of Fljotshlid.
Þessir menn allir höfðu ætlað um sumarið út til Íslands en konungur hafði lagt farbann fyrir skip þessi öll því að þeir vildu eigi taka við sið þeim er hann bauð.
These men had all intended during the summer (to sail) out to Iceland but the king had put an embargo on all these ships because they would not receive the religion that he mandated.
Allir íslenskir menn fagna vel Kjartani en þó Brandur best því að þeir voru mjög kunnir áður.
All Icelandic men welcomed with good cheer Kjartan, but nevertheless Brand best because they were close friends. (Z. kunnr - þeir vóru mjök kunnir áðr, intimate friends)
Báru nú Íslendingar saman ráð sín og kom það ásamt með þeim að níta sið þeim er konungur bauð og höfðu þessir allir samband þeir sem fyrr voru nefndir.

Þeir Kjartan lögðu nú skipinu við bryggjur og ruddu skipið og stöfuðu fyrir fé sínu.
They, Kjartan sailed the (i.e., his) ship to a dock and unloaded the ship and disposed of his goods. (Z. stafa - s. fyrir fé sínu, to dispose of one's goods)
Ólafur konungur var í bænum.
King Olaf was in the (local) villages.
Hann spyr skipkomu þessa og það með að þar munu þeir menn margir á skipi er mikilhæfir eru.
He sees this ship arrival and that also there that many men on the ship who likely were eminent.
Það var um haustið einn góðan veðurdag að menn fóru úr bænum til sunds á ána Nið.
That was during the fall a good weather day that men went out of the farm houses to the channel at the river channel Nid.
Þeir Kjartan sjá þetta.
They, Kjartan (and the others), saw this.
Þá mælti Kjartan til sinna félaga að þeir mundu fara til sundsins að skemmta sér um daginn.
Then Kjartan said to his partners that they would go to the channel to amuse themselves during the day.
Þeir gera svo.
They did so.
Einn maður lék þar miklu best.
One man played there very best.
Þá spyr Kjartan Bolla ef hann vilji freista sunds við bæjarmanninn.
Then Kjartan asks Bolla if he wanted to make a trial of the channel with the farmers.
Bolli svarar: "Ekki ætla eg það mitt færi."
Bolli answers: "I don't intend that what I am able to do." (Z. fri - what one is able to do (ekki ætla ek þetta mitt f.)
"Eigi veit eg hvar kapp þitt er nú komið," segir Kjartan, "og skal eg þá til."
"I don't know where your eagerness has now come," says Kjartan, "and then I shall, too."
Bolli svarar: "Það máttu gera ef þér líkar."
Bolli answers: "(You) can do that if you like."
Kjartan fleygir sér nú út á ána og að þessum manni er best er sundfær og færir niður þegar og heldur niðri um hríð.
Kjartan now flies out to the river and to this man who is best able to swim and plunges (him) under the water at once and holds (him) down a while. (Z. fra - f. e-n í kaf, to plunge one under water; f. e-n niðr = f. e-n í kaf)
Lætur Kjartan þenna upp.
Kjartan lets this (person) up.
Og er þeir hafa eigi lengi uppi verið þá þrífur sá maður til Kjartans og keyrir hann niður og eru niðri ekki skemur en Kjartani þótti hóf að, koma enn upp.
And when they have not long been up, then that man suddenly takes hold of Kjartan and flings him down and (they) are not down a short time than Kjartan thought to come up to (the surface), (they) come still up.
Engi höfðust þeir orð við.
They didn't hint to each other anything. (Z. orð - hafa við o., to hint at)
Hið þriðja sinn fara þeir niður og eru þeir þá miklu lengst niðri.
The third time they go under and they are then much longer under.
Þykist Kjartan nú eigi skilja hversu sjá leikur mun fara og þykist Kjartan aldrei komið hafa í jafnrakkan stað fyrr.
Kjartan didn't think now how to break off the game will go and Kjartan never thought to have come to an equal (rakkan?) place previously.
Þar kemur að lyktum að þeir koma upp og leggjast til lands.
Then (it) happens at last that they came up and lay themselves on land.
