Fór Þorleikur nú á fund landseta sinna, Kotkels og Grímu, og bað þau gera nokkurn hlut þann er Hrúti væri svívirðing að.
Thorleik now went to meet his tenants, Kotkel and Grim, and asked them (to) make no such participation that Hrut would be disgraced at.

Þau tóku undir þetta léttlega og kváðust þess vera albúin.
They took hold of this easily and stated for themselves they were quite willing.

Síðan fer Þorleikur heim.
Thorleik then went home.

But a little later they, Kotkell and Grima and their sons, make a journey from home.

Það var um nótt.
That was during the night.

Þau fóru á bæ Hrúts og gerðu þar seið mikinn.
They went to Hrut's farm and did (i.e., performed) much sorcery there.

And when the sounds of incantation arose then they thought it is no difference in what was would mean. (??)

En fögur var sú kveðandi að heyra.
And such enchanting was beautiful to hear.

Hrut alone knew this noise (plural in ON) and asked (that) no man look out at their night "and each keep himself/herself awake which can and will not then harm us if (it) is done so (i.e., they follow Hrut's instructions). (Z. vaka 1 - halda vöku sinni, to keep oneself awake)

En þó sofnuðu allir menn.
And nevertheless all people slept.

Hrútur vakti lengst og sofnaði þó.
Hrut wakened the longest and nevertheless slept.

Hrut's son was named Kari who was then twelve years old and he was the most promising son of Hrut.

Hann unni honum mikið.
He loved him much.

Kari almost didn't fall asleep because to him a play sister was sent. (?)

Honum gerðist ekki mjög vært.
He didn't feel much at ease. (Z. værr 1 - honum gerðist ekki mjök vært, he did not feel much at ease)

Kári spratt upp og sá út.
Kari sprang up and looked out.

Hann gekk á seiðinn og féll þegar dauður niður.
He went to the spell and at once fell down dead.

Hrútur vaknaði um morguninn og hans heimamenn og saknaði sonar síns.
Hrut and his household servants woke up during the morning and felt the loss of his son.

Fannst hann örendur skammt frá durum.
He was found dead a short way from the door (to their house).

Þetta þótti Hrúti hinn mesti skaði og lét verpa haug eftir Kára.
Hrut thought this the greatest loss and raised a (burial) mound over Kari.

Síðan ríður hann á fund Ólafs Höskuldssonar og segir honum þau tíðindi er þar höfðu gerst.
Then he rides to meet Olaf, son of Hoskuld, and tells him the news that had happened.

Ólafur varð óður við þessi tíðindi og segir verið hafa mikla vanhyggju er þeir höfðu látið sitja slík illmenni hið næsta sér sem þau Kotkell voru, sagði og Þorleik hafa sér illan hlut af deilt af málum við Hrút en kvað þó meira að orðið en hann mundi vilja.
Olaf became furious with this news and says has been much lack of forethought when they had sat such bad men as they the Kotkells were next to themselves, said also Thorleik has himself bad part of allotment of the case with Hrut and stated yet more to become than he would want.

Olaf stated they at once should kill them, Kotkel and his wife and sons "which although of-delayed-at now."

Þeir Ólafur og Hrútur fara með fimmtán menn.
They, Olaf and Hrut, go with fifteen men.

En er þau Kotkell sjá mannareið að bæ sínum þá taka þau undan í fjall upp.
And when they, Kotkell (and others) see a body of horsemen at their farms then they run way up in the mountains.

Þar varð Hallbjörn slíkisteinsauga tekinn og dreginn belgur á höfuð honum.
Hallbjorn "such stone eyes" was taken there and (the) skin drawn off his head.

At once were then captured men in custody with him and some sought after them, Kotkatl and Grim and Stigand up on the mountain.

Þau Kotkell og Gríma urðu áhend á hálsinum milli Haukadals og Laxárdals.
They, Kotkell and Grim, were seized on the ridge between Haukadal and Laxardal.

They were stoned to death there and was there made for them a cairn of stones and that itself a marking and that is called Strattavard. (close to Z. hel 3 - berja e-n grjóti í hel, to stone one to death.)

Stigand ran away to the south of the ridge of Haukadal and there he vanished from their sight. (Z. hverfa 2 - siðan hvarf hann þeim, he vanished out of their sight)

Hrut and his sons went by sea with Hallbjorn.

Þeir settu fram skip og reru frá landi með hann.
They launched a ship and rowed from land with him.

Then they took the skin off his head and tied a stone to (his) neck.

Hallbjorn drove then wide open eyes to land and his look was not good.
