33. kafli - Af draumum Guðrúnar
Gestur Oddleifsson bjó vestur á Barðaströnd í Haga. Hann var höfðingi mikill
og spekingur að
Gest Oddleif’s son lived west in Bardastrand in Hagi. He was a great

One certain time it happened so that Gest rode to (the) Thing and stayed
overnight at Hol. He readied himself in the morning
snemma því að leið var löng. Hann ætlaði um kveldið í Þykkvaskóg til Ármóðs

ride to us in the evening with all your people.

Gestur tók þessu vel og kvað þetta skörulegt erindi en kvaðst þó mundu ríða
svo sem hann hafði ætlað.
Gest accepted this happily and said this (to be) a notable errand, but said
still he would ride as he had expected.
Guðrún mælti: "Dreymt hefir mig margt í vetur en fjórir eru þeir draumar er
mér afla mikillar
Gudrun spoke, “I have dreamt much in winter and four are those dreams which
cause me great
áhyggju en engi maður hefir þá svo ráðið að mér líki og bið eg þó eigi þess
að þeir séu í vil ráðnir."
anxiety and no man has interpreted them so to my liking and yet I ask not
this that they be interpreted to one’s liking.”
Gestur mælti þá: "Seg þú drauma þína. Vera má að vér gerum af nokkuð."
Gest spoke then, “Tell your dreams. (It) may be that we make something of
(them).”
Guðrún segir: "Úti þóttist eg vera stödd við læk nokkurn og hafði eg
krókfald á höfði og þótti
Gudrun says, “I thought myself to be standing outside by some lake and I had
a headdress on (my ) head and (it) seemed
mér illa sama og var eg fúsari að breyta faldinum en margir töldu um að eg
skyldi það eigi gera.
to ill become me and I was more willing to spread the folds but many spoke
about (it) that I should not do it.
En eg hlýddi ekki á það og greip eg af höfði mér faldinn og kastaði eg út á
lækinn og var þessi draumur eigi lengri."
But I didn’t listen to it and I seized the folds off my head and I cast (it)
out into a lake and this dream was not longer.”
Og enn mælti Guðrún: "Það var upphaf að öðrum draum að eg þóttist vera stödd
hjá vatni einu.
And still Gudrun spoke, “It was the beginning of another dream that I
thought myself to be standing near some water.
Svo þótti mér sem kominn væri silfurhringur á hönd mér og þóttist eg eiga og
einkar vel sama.
So (it) seemed to me as if a silver ring were come on my hand and I seemed
to own (it) and (It) suited (me) very well.
Þótti mér það vera allmikil gersemi og ætlaði eg lengi að eiga. Og er mér
voru minnstar vonir þá
(It) seemed to me to be a tremendously great treasure and I intended to own
it for a long time. And when (it) was to me least to be expected then
renndi hringurinn af hendi mér og á vatnið og sá eg hann aldrei síðan. Þótti
mér sjá skaði miklu
the ring ran off my hand and into the water and I saw it never afterwards.
This seemed to me a much greater loss
meiri en eg mætti að líkindum ráða þótt eg hefði einum grip týnt. Síðan
vaknaði eg."
than I could guess at a thing though I had lost a valuable thing.
Afterwards I awakened.”
