On this part I was thinking back to the Vinland Saga where the claim was
that they had come to a location on the North American coast where grains or
grass grew and the animals took care of themselves all winter and the
self-feeding thing came up. I do not know if there were normally shepherds
out with the sheep since in Iceland there were no predators. I think the
reference is that they did not have to make hay to feed them for the most
part.

I went digging in CV s.vv. <ganga>, <sjálfala>: in this
context <ganga> is 'to graze', and <sjálfala> means that
they were doing so without a shepherd.
