<Statt> is the neuter of <staddr> 'placed, present; placed in a
certain position, situated, circumstanced', which is the past
participle of <steðja> 'to stop (something); to fix, to settle;
to make firm'. Zoëga s.v. <staddr> even has the example <hví er
ykkr svá statt til Sigfússona> 'why do ye talk thus of the sons
of S'. More literally it would be 'Why are you so situated
concerning S's sons?', 'Why is this your position concerning S's
sons?', or the like.
