If I were trying to stay as close to the original as
possible, I might translate the first instance of the
relative particle <er> as 'in respect of which' or something
similar.

In this context it seems likely that <hlutr> is 'case', and
that <meiri> is effectively 'better': he always had the
better case, i.e., he was always on the winning side.

Possibly elliptical for <eiga hlut í e-u> 'to have a share
in a thing, to be concerned in a thing', which would make it
'... that I will be concerned', i.e., 'I don't think that
your words really apply to me'.
