By contrast, I'm hopeless at crosswords, cryptic or otherwise ;-)
With kennings though, most of those that occur belong to a relatively
small group of metaphors, and a lot of it is just a matter of
recognising synonyms and untangling combinations (which admittedly can
be pretty tangled!) and working out how to bracket them – or of
knowing a good place to look them up [
