My husband sometimes refers to our barn cat - which we have had for years
and which he knows to be male (although neutered)- as "she" in conversation.

This could be because:
1. our house cat - passed away about five years ago - - was female.
2. maybe there is a tendency to describe small creatures as female.
3. a neutered male can't be taken grammatically seriously?
