Hello everyone,
I am a student of Scandinavian philology in Prague, Czech republic. I
am very interested in Old Norse, not a specialist though.
I've been reading your interesting discussions for a while, and now I
have a specific question.
I am translating the poem Buslubaen from the fornaldar saga about Bosi
and Herraud into my native language and I am not sure about how to
translate the word baen occuring in the title of the poem. Some
editions translate the title as Busla's curse. Such translation is
clearly justified and more appropriate, taking account of the context
of the poem. But so far, I haven't found any occurence of this word in
the meaning of "curse" (disregarding this hypothetical case).
According to the dictionaries baen only means prayer or boon.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.
David
