Þeir kváðust ekki sjá það er tíðindum sætti.

They said of themselves not to see that news were of importance.

"Eg veit eigi, "segir Leifur, "hvort eg sé skip eða sker."

"I don't know," says Leif, "whether I see a ship or a skerry."

Nú sjá þeir og kváðu sker vera. Hann sá því framar en þeir að hann sá menn í
skerinu.

Now they see and declare (it) to be a skerry. He saw it better than they
(in) that he saw men on the skerry.

"Nú vil eg að vér beitum undir veðrið, "segir Leifur, "svo að vér náum til
þeirra ef menn

"Now I want that we sail near the wind," says Leif, "so that we reach them
if (the) men

eru þurftugir að ná vorum fundi og er nauðsyn á að duga þeim. En með því að
þeir séu

are in need to reach a meeting with us and (if?) need be in (the situation)
to help them. But with that because be they

eigi friðmenn þá eigum vér allan kost undir oss en þeir ekki undir sér."

not peaceful men then we have all opportunities at hand and they do not."

Nú sækja þeir undir skerið og lægðu segl sitt, köstuðu akkeri og skutu
litlum báti öðrum

Now they search below the skerry and took in their sails, cast anchor and
launched (the) other little boat

er þeir höfðu haft með sér. Þá spurði Leifur hver þar réði fyrir liði.

which they had had with them. Then Leif asked who was in command of (their)
company.

Sá kveðst Þórir heita og vera norænn maður að kyni "eða hvert er þitt nafn?"

That one said of himself to be called Thorir and to be a Norse man by
descent, "and what is your name?"

Leifur segir til sín.

Leif says his.

"Ertu son Eiríks rauða úr Brattahlíð?" segir hann.

"Are you a son of Eric the red of Brattahlid?" says he.

Leifur kvað svo vera: "Nú vil eg, "segir Leifur, "bjóða yður öllum á mitt
skip og

Leif said (it) to be so, "Now I want," says Leif, "to invite all of you to
my ship and

fémunum þeim er skipið má við taka."

those valuables which the ship can take along."

Þeir þágu þann kost og sigldu síðan til Eiríksfjarðar með þeim farmi þar til
er þeir komu

They accepted this choice and sailed afterwards to Eric's Firths with that
cargo until when they came

til Brattahlíðar, báru farminn af skipi. Síðan bauð Leifur Þóri til vistar
með sér og Guðríði

to Brattahlid, carried the cargo from (the) ship. Afterwards Leif invited
Thorir to stay with him and Gudrid,

konu hans og þrem mönnum öðrum en fékk vistir öðrum hásetum, bæði Þóris og
sínum

his wife and three other men and made arrangements for (the rest of the)
oarsmen, both Thorir's and his crew, to stay.

félögum. Leifur tók fimmtán menn úr skerinu. Hann var síðan kallaður Leifur
hinn

Leif took fifteen men off the skerry. He was afterwards called Leif the
Lucky.

heppni. Leifi varð nú bæði gott til fjár og mannvirðingar.

Leif became now both good concerning wealth and reputation.

Þann vetur kom sótt mikil í lið Þóris og andaðist hann Þórir og mikill hluti
liðs hans.

That winter a great sickness came to Thorir's company and he, Thorir, died
and a large proportion of his company.

Þann vetur andaðist og Eiríkur rauði.

That winter Eric the red also died.

Nú var umræða mikil um Vínlandsför Leifs og þótti Þorvaldi bróður hans of
óvíða kannað hafa verið landið.

Now (there) was much discussion about Leif's Vinland journey and (it) seemed
to Thorvald, his brother, land (only) narrowly to have been explored.

Þá mælti Leifur við Þorvald: "Þú skalt fara með skip mitt bróðir ef þú vilt
til Vínlands og

Then Leif spoke with Thorvald, "You shall go with my ship, brother, if you
want to (go) to Vinland and

vil eg þó að skipið fari áður eftir viði þeim er Þórir átti í skerinu."

I still want that the ship sail first after that wood which Thorir had on
the skerry.

Og svo var gert.

And so (it) was done.
