Síðan kvaddi hann til ferðar með sér bræður sína tvo og húskarla þrjá.
After that he called - to travel with him his two brothers and three house-carls
Þeir
fóru á leið fyrir Höskuld og sátu fyrir honum norður frá garði í gróf
nokkurri og biðu þar til þess er var miður aftan.
They went to the way/road before Hoskuld and lay in wait for him,
North of the farm in a certain pit/hollow and waited there until it was evening (mid-afternoon - probably half five - six)
Þá reið Höskuldur að þeim.
Þeir spretta þá upp allir með vopnum og sækja að honum.
Then rode Hoskuld towards them and they all sprang up with weapons and attacked him
Höskuldur varðist svo vel að þeir fá lengi eigi sóttan hann.
Hoskuld defended himself so well it was a long (time) they could not strike him down
En þar kom um síðir að hann særði
Lýting á hendi en drap heimamenn hans tvo og féll síðan.
But it came to a time (as time went on -Cook Trans) that he wounded Lýting in the arm and killed two of his housemen then he fell.
Þeir særðu Höskuld
sextán sárum en eigi hjuggu þeir höfuð af honum. Þeir fóru í skógana fyrir austan Rangá og fálu sig þar
They wounded Hoskuld sixteen times (lit wounds) but did not cut off his head (lit cut the head off him). They went via the Forest east of Rang River and hid themselves there
Þetta kveld hið sama hafði smalamaður Hróðnýjar fundið Höskuld dauðan og fór heim og sagði Hróðnýju víg sonar síns.
That same evening one of Hrodny's Shepherds found Hoskuld dead and went home and told Hrodny of the killing of her son
Hún mælti: "Ekki mun hann dauður vera eða var af höfuðið?"
She spoke "He may not be dead - was his head off"
"Eigi var það," segir hann.
" It was not" says he
"Vita mun eg ef eg sé," segir hún, "og tak þú hest minn og akfæri."
"I shall know if I see (him) says she "take the Horse and my sleigh"
Hann gerði svo og bjó um með öllu og síðan fóru þau þangað sem Höskuldur lá.
He did so and made it all ready and then they went thither to where Hoskuld lay/was lying
Hún leit á sárin og mælti: "Svo er sem mig varði að hann mundi ekki dauður með öllu og mun Njáll græða stærri sár."
He looked at the wounds and spoke "It is just/even as I thought he may not be all/quite dead and Njal heals worse wounds"

Síðan tóku þau og lögðu hann í vagarnar og óku til Bergþórshvols
og báru þarinn í sauðahús og láta hann sitja upp við vegginn.
Then they took him up and laid him on the wagon and drove to Bergthorsknoll , and bore him in there in a sheepshed and placed him sitting up against a wall
Síðan gengu þau heim bæði
og drápu á dyr og gekk húskarl einn til dyra.
Then they went both to the house and knocked at the door and a housecarl came to the door
Hún snarar þegar inn hjá honum
og fer þar til er hún kemur að hvílu Njáls.
She rushed in at once - past him and went until she came to Njal's bedplace
Hún spurði hvort Njáll vekti.
Hann kveðst sofið hafa þar til "en nú er eg vaknaður. Eða hví ert þú hér komin svo snemma?"
She asked Njal whether he was awake he declared he had been sleeping but "now i am awake - but why are you here so early"
[here she was either mad with grief or sarcastic and rude - I suspect the latter]
Hróðný mælti: "Statt þú upp úr binginum frá elju minni og gakk út með mér og svo hún og synir þínir."
Hrodny spoke "Stand up (sing.-thou) from out of the bed of my rival and Come outside with me - and Her too and thy sons.
[again the use of single - thy)
[elju can be a rival or a secondary wife - which is as rude as Halgerð can get - but Hrodny has no cause to badmouth Bergthora]
Þau stóðu upp og gengu út.
They both stood up and came out
Skarphéðinn mælti: "Tökum vér vopn vor og höfum með oss."
Skarpheðin spoke "lets take our weapons and have them with us"
Njáll lagði ekki til þess og hljópu þeir inn og gengu út vopnaðir. Fer
Hróðný fyrir til þess er þau koma að sauðahúsinu
Njal lay nothing to this (he did not object) and they ran in and came out with the weapons (all ready for a fight)
Hrodny went ahead and they came to the Sheep shed
I rather enjoyed this bit - Skarpheðin being on the alert and taking care. I have a very bad feeling about the end of this - Hrodny was - I feel - doing a Hallgerð - being sarcastic and rude to Bergthora
