Nú er að segja frá Njáli að hann ríður til fundar við þá nafna.
Now it is to say of Njal that he rides to meet the namesakes

"Óvarlega liggið þér," segir hann, "eða til hvers skal för sjá ger hafa
verið? Og er Gunnar engi klekktunarmaður.
"Careless are you lying (around)" says he "What purpose (is there ) for your trip and Gunnar is no chickenhearted man (Z)

and if talk be told (if talk is true) then this is the worst plot against a life. You shall also know that Gunnar is gathering his warriors (troops/band) and he will come here to kill you unless you ride away home

Þeir brugðust við skjótt og varð þeim mjög um felmt og tóku vopn sín og
stigu á hesta sína og hleyptu heim undir Þríhyrning.
They got up quickly and a great fear came upon them and they took up their weapons and mounted their horses and galloped away home to below Three- horns (hot-footed it)

Njal went to meet Gunnar and told him not to break up the crowd (of his followers) "and I will (be) go between and try to get agreements,

They will now be fairly (Z) afraid but for this plot on your life it shall not come to less than with those who have attempted it (already)

en eigi
skal meira koma fyrir víg annars hvors þeirra nafna þó að það kunni við að
bera. Skal eg varðveita þetta fé og svo fyrir sjá að þá sé þér innan handar
er þú þarft til að taka."
but it shall come to more for the killing of either namesake if that happens.
I shall look after (mind) this money for this reason until you need to take it

70. kafli

Gunnar þakkaði Njáli tillögur sínar. Njáll reið undir Þríhyrning og sagði
þeim nöfnum að Gunnar mundi ekki eyða flokkinum fyrr en úr sliti með þeim.
Gunnar thanked Njal for his help. Njal rode to "Under Three-horns" and told the namesakes that Gunnar would not disband his men before it was settled (with them)

They both offered compensation for themselves and asked  Njal to go
(for them) to offer terms

Njáll kvaðst með því einu fara mundu er eigi fylgdu svik.
Njal declared he would only take/go with - offers that had no treachery (in them)

They  asked him to be involved in the case (?)  and declared they would abide by what he  arranged
Njal said he would, but at Thing only, (and) if the best men were there

They agreed to that. Njal went then between so that  each confirmed to either
with handshakes - peace and truce. (and that) Njal should intercede and to name those he wanted to help (him)

Litlu síðar fundi þeir nafnar Mörð Valgarðsson.
A little later the namesakes went to see Morð Valgarðsson. (truce breakers)

Mörður taldi á þá mjög er
þeir höfðu lagið mál undir Njál þar sem hann var vinur Gunnars mikill, kvað
þeim það illa duga mundu.
Morð talked a great deal (rebuked)  for that they had placed the case with Njal seeing he was Gunnars great Friend, declaring that it would help (their case) but little

Ríða menn nú til alþingis að vanda. Eru nú hvorirtveggju á þingi.

Men rode to thing as usual Each (one) of the two (groups) was at Thing

komnir
Njal  asked for a hearing (for silence to let him speak) and asked the Chieftains and those (of) the best men who had come there

hvert mál þeim þætti Gunnar eiga á þeim nöfnum fyrir fjörráðin.
what case did they think that Gunnar had with the Namesakes for ploltting against his life

Þeir
svöruðu að þeim þótti slíkur maður mikinn rétt á sér eiga.
They answered that such a great man did have something due to him

Njáll spurði
hvort hann ætti á öllum þeim eða ættu fyrirmenn einir að svara málinu.
Njal asked whether it was due on all of them or the leaders alone to
answer the case

Þeir sögðu mest á fyrirmönnum en þó á öllum mikið.
They said mostly the chiefs (to answer) but just the same all had some
(to answer or account for)

This seemed to be "easier" any critique welcome
