and found five Skraelings (wearing) skin tunics asleep near the sea, beside them they had pots of deer-marrow and blood.
Þóttust þeir Karlsefni það
skilja að þessir menn myndu hafa verið gervir brott af landinu. Þeir drápu
þá.
To them - Karlsefni (& Co) it seems they are those who must have been the attackers. They killed them
Síðan fundu þeir Karlsefni nes eitt og á fjölda dýra. Var nesið að sjá
sem mykiskán væri af því að dýrin lágu þar um næturnar.
Then they the Karlsefnis found a headland with many deer/animals. the headland was like a great cake of dung because the deer were there for the nights (winters says MM& HP)
[They seem to drop the name Deer onto everything - it probably signified "critter" well they called nuts fruit what do you expect]
Nú koma þeir Karlsefni aftur í Straumsfjörð og voru þar fyrir alls gnóttir
þess er þeir þurftu að hafa.
Now they the Karlsefnis came back to Straumsfjord ad there was an abundance of all they needed/wanted to have
Það er sumra manna sögn að þau Bjarni og Guðríður hafi þar eftir verið og

It has been said by some people that they Bjorn and Guðrið had been there afterward with 100 people and had not sailed further (?remained there)

Snorri hafi suður farið og fjórir tigir manna með þeim og hafi eigi lengur
verið í Hópi en vart tvo mánuði og hafi sama sumar aftur komið.
and they (the) Karlsefnis have sailed South after no longer than two months in Hopi and came back that same Summer
Karlsefni fór þá einu skipi að leita Þórhalls veiðimanns en annað liðið var

Karlsefni went then in one ship to seek Thorhall the hunter but another company/troop was after (later)
og fóru þeir norður fyrir Kjalarnes og ber þá fyrir vestan fram og var
landið á bakborða þeim.
and they sailed North to Kjalarnes and then held west so that land was to the port side (aka larboard - left if you are looking up at the sharp end)
Þar voru þá eyðimerkur einar allt að sjá fyrir þeim
og nær hvergi rjóður í.
There was then all one (solid) wilderness to see and hardly a clearing

Það var einn morgun er þeir Karlsefni sáu fyrir ofan rjóðrið flekk nokkurn
sem glitraði við þeim og æptu þeir á það.
It was one (particular) morning when the Karlsefnis saw some reddish flecks that glittered and they shouted at it
Það hrærðist og var það
einfætingur og skaust ofan á þann árbakkann sem þeir lágu við. Þorvaldur
Eiríksson rauða sat við stýri.
It seemed afraid and was a Uniped (single-foot - aint no such Animal) it came bounding / hopping down to the place where they lay (?at Anchor)
Þá mælti Þorvaldur: "Gott land höfum vér fengið."
Thorvald Eiriksson was at the tiller and -
Said thorvald "Good land we have found"
Þá hleypur einfætingurinn á brott og norður aftur og skaut áður í smáþarma á
Þorvald. Hann dró út örina.
Then the Uniped leaps away to the North and arrow into Thorvald's lower belly/groin (MM& HP). He drew out the arrow
Þá mælti Þorvaldur: "Feitt er um ístruna."
Then said Thorvald "I have much fat in my Guts"
(I doubt if he was polite in speech)
