10. kafli
Karlsefni fór suður fyrir land og Snorri og Bjarni og annað lið
þeirra.
Karlsefni travelled South along the coast, and Snorri and Bjorn and others of their company
Þeir fóru lengi og til þess er þeir komu að á þeirri er féll
af landi ofan og í vatn og svo til sjóvar.
They travelled a long while until they came to a river which ran down into a lake and thence to the sea
Eyrar voru þar miklar
fyrir árósinum og mátti eigi komast inn í ána nema að háflæðum.
There were many sand/gravel banks at the river-mouth and they were unable to come in except at high tides
Sigldu þeir Karlsefni þá til áróssins og kölluðu í Hópi landið.
Karlsefni and they, sailed into the Rivermouth -(estuary) and called the place Hopi (Tidal)
Þar
fundu þeir sjálfsána hveitiakra þar sem lægðir voru en vínviður allt
þar sem holta kenndi.
They found there wild wheat/grain in the low lying places and vines on the higher ground
Hver lækur var þar fullur af fiskum. Þeir gerðu
þar grafir sem landið mættist og flóðið gekk efst, og er út féll voru
helgir fiskar í gröfunum.
The lakes were full of fish. They dug there pits at highwater mark then when the water went out there were "Holy Fish" in the pits. [usually means Halibut in Icelend]
Þar var mikill fjöldi dýra á skógi með öllu
móti. Þeir voru þar hálfan mánuð og skemmtu sér og urðu við ekki
varir. Fé sitt höfðu þeir með sér.
There were there a great many various kinds of animals in the woods.
They were there a half month, enjoying them selves and finding/noticing nothing remarkable/ unusual. Their animals they had with them
Og einn morgunn snemma er þeir lituðust um sáu þeir níu húðkeipa og
var veift trjánum af skipunum og lét því líkast í sem í hálmþústum og
fer sólarsinnis.
But early one morning they noticed about nine skin-covered boats and there were waved poles from the boats that seemed like flails and in a sunwise direction (?clockwise)
Þá mælti Karlsefni: "Hvað mun þetta tákna?"
Then said Karlsefni "What may this mean"
Snorri svarar honum: "Vera kann að þetta sé friðartákn og tökum
skjöld hvítan og berum í mót."
Snorri replies to him "This could be a sign of peace/greeting let us take a white shield and go to meet them with it"
Og svo gerðu þeir. Þá reru hinir í mót og undruðust þá og gengu þeir
á land
And they did so. They (the people) rowed towards them and wondered at them as they landed
Þeir voru smáir menn og illilegir og illt höfðu þeir hár á
höfði. Eygðir voru þeir mjög og breiðir í kinnunum og dvöldust þeir
um stund og undruðust, reru síðan í brott og suður fyrir nesið.
They were small men and ugly looking and their hair ill-done on their heads (?Mohican Cuts). Their eyes ere staring (this would make them seem large) and their cheekbones wide and they stayed awhile - being amazed and rowed away afterwards southwards from the Ness
Þeir höfðu gert byggðir sínar upp frá vatninu og voru sumir skálarnir
nær vatninu en sumir firr. Nú voru þeir þar þann vetur. Þar kom alls
engi snjár og allur fénaður gekk þar úti sjálfala.
They had made their huts up away from the water - some were nearer to the lake and some further awy.
Now they were there that winter. There was no snow, and all the animals out grazing

En er vora tók geta þeir að líta einn morgun snemma að fjöldi
húðkeipa reri sunnan fyrir nesið, svo margir sem kolum væri sáð og
var þó veift á hverju skipi trjánum.
But when spring somes - they get to seeing early one (particular) morning many skin-boats rowing from the south - round the ness, they were as many as coals/cinders and still the poles were waving on each ship.
[I wonder if the ref. to coals and cinders expresses the colour of the hair and faces of the natives - Norse People being fair - which would be a novelty to the Natives]
Þeir brugðu þá skjöldum upp og tóku kaupstefnu sín á millum og vildi
það fólk helst kaupa rautt klæði. Þeir vildu og kaupa sverð og spjót
en það bönnuðu þeir Karlsefni og Snorri.
They brandished their sheilds and started trading and the folk wished to trade for the Red Cloth. They also wished to trade for swords and spears but Karlsefni and Snorri forbade/banned this.
Þeir höfðu ófölvan belg
fyrir klæðið og tóku spannarlangt klæði fyrir belg og bundu um höfuð
sér og fór svo um stund.
They had dark pelts for the cloth and a span's length for a pelt and they bound it around their heds, and it went thus for a while
En er minnka tók klæðið þá skáru þeir í
sundur svo að eigi var breiðara en þvers fingrar breitt. Gáfu þeir
Skrælingjar jafnmikið fyrir eða meira.
But when the cloth ran out they cut it not wider than across a finger. those Skraelings gave as much or more for it.
Það bar til að griðungur hljóp úr skógi er þeir Karlsefni áttu og
gall hátt við.
It happened that a Bull which they and Karlsefni had, ran out of the Forest bellowing loudly (See G. - gjalla - p349)
Þeir fælast við Skrælingjar og hlaupa út á keipana og
reru suður fyrir land. Varð þá ekki vart við þá þrjár vikur í samt.
Those Skraelings were frightened and ran to the boats and rowed south for home. They became wary of them (K & S & Co.) for three weeks together
