10. kafli

Karlsefni fór suður fyrir land og Snorri og Bjarni og annað lið þeirra. Þeir
fóru lengi og til

Karlsefni sailed south for land and Snorri and Bjarni and others of their
company. They sailed a long time and until

þess er þeir komu að á þeirri er féll af landi ofan og í vatn og svo til
sjóvar. Eyrar voru

this when they came to that river which fell down from the land and into a
lake and thus to (the) sea. There were

þar miklar fyrir árósinum og mátti eigi komast inn í ána nema að háflæðum.

many islands before the mouth of the river and (they) might not come into
the river except at high flood tide.

Sigldu þeir Karlsefni þá til áróssins og kölluðu í Hópi landið. Þar fundu
þeir sjálfsána

Then they, Karlsefni (and company) sailed to the mouth of the river and
called it Inlet land. There they found self sown

hveitiakra þar sem lægðir voru en vínviður allt þar sem holta kenndi. Hver
lækur var þar

wheat fields there which were low lying and grape vines all (over) there
where (they) explored rough hills. Each lake there was

fullur af fiskum. Þeir gerðu þar grafir sem landið mættist og flóðið gekk
efst, og er út féll

full of fish. They made a ditch there where (the) land permitted and high
tide peaked and when (the) tide ran out

voru helgir fiskar í gröfunum. Þar var mikill fjöldi dýra á skógi með öllu
móti. Þeir voru

(there) were halibut fish in the ditch. There were manifold creatures in
the forest of all kinds. They were

þar hálfan mánuð og skemmtu sér og urðu við ekki varir. Fé sitt höfðu þeir
með sér.

there half a month and entertained themselves and became unconcerned. They
had their animals with them.

Og einn morgunn snemma er þeir lituðust um sáu þeir níu húðkeipa og var
veift trjánum

And early one morning when they looked around they saw nine kayaks and a
pole was waved

af skipunum og lét því líkast í sem í hálmþústum og fer sólarsinnis.

from the ship and it allowed to seem as a flail carried sunwise.

Þá mælti Karlsefni: "Hvað mun þetta tákna?"

Then Karlsefni spoke, "What will this betoken?"

Snorri svarar honum: "Vera kann að þetta sé friðartákn og tökum skjöld
hvítan og berum í mót."

Snorri answers him, "(It) can be that this be a peace token and (let us)
take white shields and carry (the) to meet (these people)."

Og svo gerðu þeir. Þá reru hinir í mót og undruðust þá og gengu þeir á land.
Þeir voru

And so they did. Then those (people) rowed towards (them) and wondered at
them and they went on land. They were

smáir menn og illilegir og illt höfðu þeir hár á höfði. Eygðir voru þeir
mjög og breiðir í

small men and hideous and they had (their) hair badly (done) on (their)
heads. They were many-eyed (they were staring? - - both Jones and M & P
have large eyes which seems unlikely given the appearance of the natives)
and wide in

they cheek bones and they stayed for a while and were amazed and rowed away
afterwards and south of (the) point.

They had made their huts up from the water and some huts were nearer the

11. kafli

En er vora tók geta þeir að líta einn morgun snemma að fjöldi húðkeipa reri
sunnan fyrir

But when spring arrived they get to see early one morning that a crowd of
kayaks are rowing from the south before

fyrir belg og

Snorri, forbade it. They had dark pelts (to trade) for cloth and a spans'
length of cloth for a pelt and



bundu um höfuð sér og fór svo um stund. En er minnka tók klæðið þá skáru
þeir í sundur

(they) bound (the cloth) about their head and it went so for a while. But
when the cloth became less, then they cut it asunder



svo að eigi var breiðara en þvers fingrar breitt. Gáfu þeir Skrælingjar
jafnmikið fyrir eða meira.

so that (it) was not wider than across one finger's width. They, the
Skraelings, gave even so much for (those little strips) or more.



Það bar til að griðungur hljóp úr skógi er þeir Karlsefni áttu og

It happened that a bull, which they, Karlsefni had, ran out of (the) forest
