I made a mistake of clicking send - and Yahoo slammed it back at me that I was not a member of the group so I am posting here instead - I doubt if the original will now turn up - why are Yaho0  so deliberately selective
I have two addresses and can send with either - but will post here on line in future

Eitt sinn kom Karlsefni að máli við Eirík og mælti: "Er þér þungt
Eiríkur?
At one (particular) time Karlsefni came to speak with Eirik "It is (i.e.something) troubling you Eirik (G-þungr=heavy)

Eg þykist finna að þú ert nokkuru fálátari en verið hefir,
It seems to me that you are somewhat silent (Z-fá-latr) than you have been

og þú veitir oss með mikilli rausn og erum vér skyldir að launa þér
eftir því sem vér höfum föng á. Nú segðu hvað ógleði þinni veldur."
and you have treated us most splendidly (with great magnificence-Z) we are in debt to you, to repay you by what means we can. Now you tell (polite but imperative) what causes your unhappiness"

Eirik replies "You have accepted graciously (góðmanligr CV- like a good man) and it does not occur to me  to think our dealings are lacking (?)

Hitt er heldur að mér
þykir illt ef að er spurt að þér hafið engi jól verri haft en þessi
er nú koma í hönd."
it is held to me to think ill if it could be said that you have had a Yuletide as poor as the one now coming (in hand)

Karlsefni replies " "It shall not be that (at all) we have in our ships, malt, meal, and grain and it is to you welcome (Z- you have the right) as you will to make a feast such as is worthy of your nobility

And that he  (Eitik) accepted. There was prepared such a YuleFeast so splendid that men thought there had never been such a noble-feast (?)

Og eftir jólin vekur Karlsefni við Eirík um ráðahag við Guðríði
And after the Yule Karlsefni broached with Eirik the subject of Guðrið (marriage)

 er
honum leist sem það mundi á hans forræði en honum leist kona fríð og
vel kunnandi.
it seemed to him that she was under his (Eirik's) protection, and both an attractive and well knowing (Z) woman.

Eiríkur svarar, kveðst vel mundu undir taka hans mál en
kvað hana góðs gjaforð verða
Eirik  replies declaring for himself that he would undertake (support) his suit and that she would be a good match

"er það og líklegt að hún fylgi sínum
forlögum" þó að hún væri honum gefin og kvað góða frétt af honum
koma.
" is is likely her fate will turn out as predicted" though he knew him for a good man and said Good News would come from him
(I got somewhat "bogged-down" there - Eirik is probably wrong - in predicting)

Nú er vakið mál við hana og lét hún það sitt ráð sem Eiríkur vildi
fyrir sjá.
Now the subject was broached with Guðrið  she let see Eirik's advice as he wished her to see

And it is now not long to take with this (i.e. lets not make  a story of it) but the feast went on as a Bridal Feast

Gleði mikið var í Brattahlíð um veturinn.
Great merrymaking was in Brattahlid that (particular) Winter

8. kafli

vera.
There was a great deal if discussion during the Winter at Brattahlid and many bpoard games (CV's entry P621 on TAFL is worth a read) and storytelling and much/many things of homely entertainment

Ætluðu þeir Karlsefni og Snorri að leita Vínlands og töluðu
menn margt um það.
They - Karlsefni and Snorri decided to go to Vinland and told Folk much of it

And the out-come  (of the talk) was that Karlsefni and Snorri made their ship ready and set sail that summer

On their journey they joined in Bjorn and Thorhall with their (own) ship and their company of travellers (CV-185) that followed them

Maður hét Þorvarður. Hann átti Freydísi, dóttur Eiríks rauða
laungetna.
A man named Thorvarð. He was married to Freydis Erik's Daughter who was secretly begotten (CV-P375)

var kallaður veiðimaður.
He travelled with them and Thorvalð Eirik'sson  -andThorhall who was called "The Huntsman"

Hann hafði lengi verið í veiðiförum með
Eiríki um sumrum og hafði hann margar varðveislur.
He had for long - been on hunting trips with Eirik during the Summers and had much in his keeping (CV) [i.e. he had been well trusted]

Þórhallur var mikill vexti, svartur og þurslegur.
Thorhall was a huge man, swarthy and ogre-like (CV-750 - with notions of surliness and stupidity)

Hann var heldur við aldur, ódæll
í skapi, hljóðlyndur, fámálugur hversdaglega, undirförull og þó
atmælasamur og fýstist jafnan hins verra.
He was old and difficult (old and cranky?) hard to deal with, (ó-dæl) taciturn,
of few words (G) commonly (G) underhand/devious(G) and so fault-finding (G) and wished the worst for everyone

Hann hafði lítt við trú
blandast síðan hún kom á Grænland.
He cared little heed for the  Faith since it had come to Greenland.

Thorhall was not much popular with people but had for a long time
held Eirik's confidence

Whew - I took much longer with that than I had anticipated - hope it is in order
Critique welcome
