I don't suppose anyone knows if there's a picture online of the
bracelet mentioned in MM & HP's footnote?

"About a century and a half ago a number of burial mounds came to
light, through erosion, near the Rang River. Several skeletons were
exposed, and from time to time various articles were found near the
remains of these mounds. The most remarkable find was a bracelet made
of bone, on which is crudely engraved a picture of two harts. The name
of Gunnar's brother, Hjort, who died in this ambush at Rang River,
means in Icelandic 'hart'; and the temptation to link the two is
almost irresistible. Archaeologists are inclined to doubt that the
design on the bracelet is from the 10th c., but have found it
impossible to date with any certainty. (The bracelet is now in the
Notional Museum of Iceland.)"

That was written in 1960, so it would be interesting to know if any
more definite conclusions have been reached since then. Here is the
museum's website [ http://www.natmus.is/ ], so maybe there's something
on there...
