Now Gunnar learns of (the) death of Hoskuld, his father-in-law. A few

Þráins , was delivered of a child

"Hér er þó betur á komið," segir Skarphéðinn. "Vér erum hvorirtveggju
hávaðamenn."

"Here is still better to come?" says Skarphedinn, "We are each of us
self-assertive men."

"Þér munuð fátt mæla," segir Gunnar, "eða gera áður en yður munu vandræði af
standa en

"You will speak less?" says Gunnar, "or do before when to you will
difficulties result from but

hér mun verða um seinna þó að allt komi fyrir eitt."

Síðan voru hrossin saman leidd. Gunnar bjó sig að keyra en Skarphéðinn
leiddi fram

Afterwards stallions were lead together. Gunnar positioned himself to whip
but Skarphedinn lead

Þorgeir og Kolur þegar á lend hesti sínum og hrinda sem þeir mega. Gunnar
hrindir nú og

they may. Gunnar also pushes now



sínum hesti í móti og verður þar skjótur atburður, sá að þeir Þorgeir féllu
báðir á bak aftur

his horse in return and suddenly there happens an accident such that they,
Þorgeir (and Kol) both fell backwards on (their) back

Starkad's son struck Gunnar's horse so that (his) eye popped out. Gunnar
struck Þorgeir
