"Ostur," segja þær.

He asked what was given to them. "Cheese" they said

Hann beiddist að sjá. Þær sýndu honum og voru það sneiðir margar. Tók hann
þær og varðveitti.

He asked for himself to see. (to be shown) They showed him and there were many slices. He took them and kept them (for safety)

Litlu síðar fór Mörður að finna Otkel. Bað hann að taka
skyldi ostkistu Þorgerðar og var svo gert.

A little later Morð went to see Otkel, he asked him (Otkel) that he should fetch Thorgerð's Cheese press and that was done

Lagði hann þar í niður sneiðirnar
og stóðst það á endum og ostkistan. Sáu þeir þá að þeim hafði heill hleifur
gefinn verið.

Therein he put (laid) the slices and it was a fit (or it matched) the shape of  the slices and the cheese press

Þá mælti Mörður: "Nú megið þér sjá að Hallgerður mun stolið hafa ostinum."

Then Morð spoke "Now you may see that Hallgerð will have stolen the cheese

Drógu þeir þá öll dæmi saman. Sagði Mörður þá að hann þóttist laus þessa
máls. Skildu þeir að því.

They drew together the proof (Z) Morð said then that he thought himself free of the matter. They parted after that.

Kolskeggur kom að máli við Gunnar og mælti: "Illt er að segja. Alræmt er að
Hallgerður muni stolið hafa og valdið þeim hinum mikla skaða er varð í
Kirkjubæ."

Kolskegg came to talk with Gunnar and said "Bad it is to say it is all-rumoured  (Noised abroad ?)  that Hallgerð would have stolen and been the cause of the great damage at Kirkby"

Gunnar kvaðst ætla að svo mundi vera "eða hvað er nú til ráðs?"

Gunnar declared that he himself thought it to be so "what is now for advice" (What is to be done)

Kolskeggur svaraði: "Þú munt þykja skyldastur að bæta fyrir konu þinni og
þykir mér ráð að þú farir að finna Otkel og bjóðir honum góð boð."

Kolskeg replied "You may think (You are ) most bound/obliged (Z) to make recompense for your wife and it seems to me (fair) advice that you go to meet Otkel and make him an offer"

"Þetta er vel mælt," segir Gunnar, "og skal svo vera."

"That is well said/spoken" Says Gunnar "and so shall it be"

Litlu síðar sendi Gunnar eftir Þráni Sigfússyni og Lamba Sigurðarsyni og
komu þeir þegar. Gunnar sagði þeim hvert hann ætlaði. Þeir létu vel yfir
því.

A little after Gunnar sent for Thrain Sigfusson and Lambi Sigurdsson and they came at once. Gunnar said to them where he intended (to go) and they went (along) well with that

Gunnar reið við hinn tólfta mann í Kirkjubæ og kallaði út Otkel.

Gunnar rode as twelfth man (he and eleven others) to Kirkby and call out Otkel

Þar var Skammkell og mælti: "Eg skal út ganga með þér og mun nú betra að
hafa vitsmuni við.

There was Skammkel and (he) spoke "I shall walk out with you and we would better have some sense with us (keep our wits about us)

Mundi eg það vilja að standa þér þá næst er þú þyrftir
mest sem nú mun vera. Þykir mér það ráð að þú látir drjúglega."

I would want it - to stand next you when you need it most as it now is. I think it is best/advised that you (?put on) an air of importance   (so stand up straight and do not fidget)

Síðan gengu þeir út, Otkell og Skammkell, Hallkell og Hallbjörn. Þeir
heilsuðu Gunnari. Hann tók því vel. Otkell spyr hvert hann ætlaði að fara.

After that they walk out Otkel and Skammkel Hallkell and Hallbjorn. They greeted Gunnar and he took it well. Otkell asked where he intended going (?)

"Ekki lengra en hingað," segir Gunnar, "og er það erindi mitt að segja þér
um skaða þann hinn mikla og hinn illa er hér er orðinn að hann er af völdum
konu minnar og þræls þess er eg keypti að þér."

"No further than (right) here" says Gunnar "and it is my errand/job to tell  you that concerning the damage, great and evil/wicked which happened here it is of the orders/directions of my wife and by this slave which I bought from you.
