Where it mentions - "do you know these" and there is a
choice - (Z) I have taken kenna to mean know - it strikes me as the basis
for Scots Dialect "Ken" which may mean to be acquainted with or to know in the
sense of recognize - I tend often to choose the less obvious
Now it is to say about Skammkel as he rides after sheep
(is the acc pl written the same as the dative Alan? I
have not my little red book to hand)
up by Rang River and he sees that something is gleaming
on the path and he dismounts (lit. leps off back)
og tekur upp og var það
hnífur og belti og þykist hann kenna
hvorttveggja og fer í Kirkjubæ.
and picks it up and it was a knife and belt and he
thought to know them both and went to Kirkby
Otkell
er úti staddur og fagnar honum vel.
Otkel is standing outside and greets him well /
warmly
Skammkell mælti til Otkels: "Kennir þú nokkuð til gripa þessa?"
Skammkel said to Otkel "do you know
something of these things"
"Kenni eg víst," segir
Otkell.
"I know them certainly" says Otkell
"Hver
á?" segir Skammkell.
"To whom do they belong" says Skammkel (Lit - who
owns)
"Melkólfur þræll," segir Otkell.
"(The) Slave Melkolf" says Otkell
"Kenna
"Then shall many/more know of them than we (two)
because true shall I be - in counsel
Þeir sýndu mörgum mönnum
og kenndu þeir allir.
They showed many men (the things) and all knew (of)
them
Þá mælti Skammkell: "Hvað munt þú nú til ráða taka?"
then said Skammkel "What plan do you now take
up*
Otkell svaraði: "Við skulum fara að finna Mörð Valgarðsson og sýna
honum og
vita hvað hann leggi til ráðs með okkur."
Otkel replied "we shall go see Morð Valgardsson and see
(learn) what he advises us
Then they went to Hof and showed Morð and asked if he
knew (of) them
Hann kvaðst kenna "eða hvað er að því? Þykist þér
til Hlíðarenda eiga eftir
nokkuru að sjá?"
He declared he knew (them) "but what is it of/about
them. Do you think at Hliðarend to see something (of your own) "
(i.e have you seen your property at
Hliðarend)
"Vant þykir oss með slíku að fara," segir Skammkell,
"er slíkir
ofureflismenn eiga í hlut."
"It seems to us hard to make (lit to go with) such "
(?thoughts) says Skammkel
"Svo er víst," segir Mörður, "en þó mun
eg vita þá hluti úr híbýlum Gunnars
er hvorgi ykkar mun vita."
"That is certain" says Morð "but the same I will know
part from Gunnar's better homestead/ home-affairs than you two
know
"Gefa viljum vér þér fé til," segja þeir, "að þú leitir eftir
þessu máli."
"We will give you money towards (it)" they say "if you
take the case"
Mörður svaraði: "Það fé mun mér fullkeypt en þó má
vera að eg hætti á."
Morð replied "This money will be dearly bought but
still I may risk it [the case]
Síðan gáfu þeir honum þrjár merkur
silfurs að hann skyldi vera með þeim í
ráðagerð og liðveislu.
Then they gave to him three silver marks that he should
be with them advisor and a supporter
Hann gaf það ráð til að konur skyldu fara með
smávarning og gefa
húsfreyjum og vita hverju þeim væri launað
He gave them advice that women should go with small
wares (craft-wares) to give to housewives and see/learn how they are
rewarded
"því að allir
hafa það skaplyndi," segir Mörður, "að gefa það fyrst upp
er stolið er ef
það hafa að varðveita, Mun hér og svo ef af mannavöldum er.
"Because all will have in mind" says Morð "to
trade/giveup first that which is stolen if she has it to hold/possess. and so we
will know if it was done by man (Z- 2 choice)
Skulu þær þá
sýna mér af hverju gefið er hvargi. Vil eg þá vera laus
máls þessa ef
uppvíst verður."
They shall show me from whom each (item) is given and I
shall be free of this case if all becomes known
Þessu
játuðu þeir. Fóru þeir heim síðan.
They agreed on this. Then went home
Mörður sendi konur í hérað og voru þær í brautu hálfan mánuð.
Morð sent women into the area/district and they were
away two weeks (lit half-month)
Þær komu aftur
og höfðu byrðar stórar. Mörður spurði hvar þeim
hefði mest gefið verið.
They came back and had large burdens/loads. Morð asked
where they had been given most to them
Þær
sögðu að þeim hefði að Hlíðarenda mest gefið verið og Hallgerður
yrði þeim
mestur drengur.
They said to them at Hliðarend had most been given and
Hallgerð had been most generous
Any advice/critique welcomed
Kveðja
