I am working on O/E and will have to transfer it all to Incredimail - and at present  O/E can go >>>>>>> oops language Patricia
The capitalized ER should be in lower case - blame Incredimail it does not like O/N and does not have a dictionary

Nú liðu þrjú þing þau ER menn ætluðu að hann mundi sækja málið.
Now three Althings had passed as people looked for  him to seek a case

Þá kom eitt
vandamál að hendi Gunnari það ER hann vissi eigi hversu upp skyldi taka.
Reið hann þá til fundar við Njál. Hann fagnar vel Gunnari.
There came to Gunnar's hands a special case that he knew not how to take up.
He rode to meet with Njal. He greeted Gunnar warmly

Gunnar mælti til Njáls: "Heilræði ER e.g. kominn að sækja að þér um eitt
vandamál."
Gunnar spoke to Njal "Wise council am I come to seek from you on a particular case"

"Maklegur ert þú þeirra," segir Njáll og réð honum ráðin.
"Welcome/Deserving art thou of that" says Njal and gave him the advice

Gunnar stóð þá upp og þakkaði honum.
Gunnar got up and thanked him

Njal spoke then and took Gunnar (yes probably by his arm - MM&HP) too long   a time  has Sigmund thy kinsman been un-atoned

"Fyrir löngu var hann bættur," segir Gunnar, "en þó vil e.g. eigi drepa hendi
við sóma mínum."
"It was long ago atoned for" says Gunnar "but nevertheless I do not wish to wave away with hand an offer that will be respectful (to show me honour)

Gunnar hafði aldrei illa mælt til Njálssona. Njáll vildi ekki annað en
Gunnar gerði um málið. Hann gerði tvö hundruð silfurs en lét Skjöld Vera
ógildan.
Gunnar had never spoken ill of Njal's sons, Njal did not want it otherwise, but Gunnar judged the case. He judged it at 200 ounces of Silver and let (allowed) Skjold to be unatoned

Þeir greiddu þegar allt féið.
They paid out the money at once

Gunnar sagði sætt þeirra upp á
Þingskálaþingi þá ER þar var mest fjölmenni
Gunnar said it was all settled at the "Thing Hall of the Althing" where there were the most people (to witness his words)  Was this the Main Hall perhaps

and told them (MM&HP) how well they had treated him  Father and sons and said concerning the words of Sigmund that led to his death - if repeated should be under penalty of outlawry (I do not have this grammatically correct I think)
(Where it says hofuðsbana - his head's loss - was that a kenning for death to avoid the word which was dreaded)

Þeir mæltu það
báðir, Gunnar og Njáll, að engir hlutir skyldu þeir til verða að eigi semdu
þeir sjálfir. Efndist það og vel síðan og voru þeir jafnan vinir.
They both declared it - Gunnar and Njal to each other to settle by themselves all matters that came up  (between them)  They fulfilled (between them) this promise and were forever Friends

46. kafli

Gissur hvíti hét maður. Hann var Teitsson Ketilbjarnarsonar hins gamla frá
Mosfelli.
Gizur the White was(the name) of a man.  He was the son of Teit son of  Ketilbjarn the Old from Mosfell

Móðir Gissurar hét Ólöf. Hún var dóttir Böðvars hersis
Víkinga-Kárasonar.
Mother of Gizur was named Alof she was daughter of Bodvar the Chieftain the son of Viking Kari

Isleif the Bishop was a son of Gizur,  Teit's mother was named Helga and she was the daughter of Þorð Bearded son of Hrapp - son of Bjorn-Buna.  Gizur the white lived at Mosfell and was a powerful chieftain

Sá maður ER nefndur til sögunnar ER Geir hét. Hann var kallaður Geir goði.
A man was named in the Sagas called Geir. He was called Geir the Priest

His Mother was named Þorkatla who was daughter to Ketilbjorn the Old of Mosfell.
Geir lived on Hlið at Bishops Tongue. They Geir and Gizur helped in every case (or always acted together)

Í þenna tíma bjó Mörður Valgarðsson að Hofi á Rangárvöllum. Hann var slægur
og illgjarn.
At that time Morð Valgardsson lived at Hof on the Rang River Flats. He was (a) cunning and meanspirited character.

Then was  (at that time) Valgard abroad, his (Morðs) father, and his Mother was dead. He was most envious of Gunnar of Hliðarend.
He (himself - Morð) was well off for money but held to be unpopular

Whew - I found that one rather tough any critique welcome -
I am wondering if - all this getting up to say thank you was especially used as respectful to the person you were thanking.  I found I had to tip-toe through the list of who-begats - they must have been keen  to know whence they came geneaology
Kveðja
