Now is to tell of Njal's sons that they went up to Fljotslid and were there
during the night

on the hillside and went near Hlidarend when it became morning. That very
same morning they got up

quickly, Sigmund and Skjold and intended to (catch) horses. They had
bridles with them and

tóku hross í túni og riðu í braut. Þeir leita stóðhestsins um hlíðina og
fundu hann meðal

took horses into (the) home meadow and rode away. They search for the
stallion on the hillside and found him between

lækja tveggja og leiddu hrossin ofan að götum mjög. Skarphéðinn sá Sigmund
því að

two brooks and lead the horse down to a good road. Skarphedinn saw Sigmund
because

hann var í litklæðum.

he was in coloured clothing.

Skarphéðinn mælti: "Sjáið þér rauðálfinn sveinar?"

Skarphedinn spoke, "Do you see the red-elf boys?"

Þeir litu til og kváðust sjá hann.

They looked and declared (themselves able) to see him.

Þá mælti Skarphéðinn: "Þú skalt gera að ekki Höskuldur því að þú munt oft
sendur einn

Then Skarphedinn spoke, "You shall not participate, Hoskuld, because you
will often (be?) sending alone

saman óvarlega. En eg ætla mér Sigmund. Þykir mér það karlmannlegt. En þið
Grímur og

and unwarily. But I intend Sigmund for myself. It seems to me manly. But
you, Grim and

Helgi skuluð vega að Skildi."

Helgi, should slay Skjold."

Hoskuld set himself down but they went until they came to them.

Skarphedinn spoke to Sigmund, "Take your weapons and defend yourself. It is
now need more than

kveða flím um oss bræður."

to (simply) recite mockery about us brothers."

Sigmundur tók vopn sín en Skarphéðinn beið meðan. Skjöldur sneri í mót þeim
Grími og

Sigmund took his weapons and Skarphedinn waited meanwhile. Skjold turned
towards them Grim and

Helga og börðust þeir í ákafa. Sigmundur hafði hjálm á höfði sér og skjöld á
hlið og

Helgi and they clashed furiously against each other. Sigmund had a helmet
on his head and a shield at his side and

gyrður sverði og hafði spjót í hendi, snýr nú í mót Skarphéðni og leggur
þegar spjótinu til

a girded sword and had a spear in hand, turns now towards Skarphedinn and
thrusts at once the spear towards

hans og kemur í skjöldinn. Skarphéðinn laust í sundur spjótskaftið og færir
upp öxina í

asunder and takes up the axe

megin

another time and smites at Sigmund and (it) came in the shield and cleaved
down (the) other side of (the)

handle of the shield. Sigmund switched the sword to his right hand and
smites at Skarphedinn and (the blow) came against

skjöldinn og festi sverðið í skildinum. Skarphéðinn snaraði svo fast
skjöldinn að

the shield and the sword became stuck in the shield. Skarphedinn turned the
shield so fast that

Sigmundur lét laust sverðið. Skarphéðinn hjó þá enn til Sigmundar með öxinni

Sigmund let loose the sword. Skarphedinn hewed then still at Sigmund with
the axe

Rimmugýgi. Sigmundur var í pansara. Öxin kom á öxlina og klauf ofan
herðarblaðið.

Tummult-hag? Sigmund was in chainmail. (these few words on this line don't
appear in MM&HP) The axe came against the shoulder and cleaved down the
shoulder blade

Hann hnykkir að sér öxinni og féll Sigmundur á kné bæði og spratt upp þegar.

He yanked the axe to him and Sigmund fell on both knees and sprang up at
once.
