Hi Bob
I have been using "A New Introduction to Old Norse"  by Michael Barnes and Anthony Faulkes
You get three books - Grammar - Glossary - and Reader, they are user friendly and I would
not be without them.
I find in general the online Dictionaries that have been recommended through out
this online study are about the best - they are free which is an added attraction.
But for Modern Icelandic there is "Teach yourself Icelandic" by Hildur Jonsdottir, that's
the one with the CD then another very good one is "Colloquial Icelandic" by
Daisy L. Neijmann.
For the Old Norse - Zoega is a really good dictionary - because it is not so prohibitively expensive as is CV - which is on-line any way but for  a small compact and useful dictionary of Modern Icelandic - you could consider the one in the Hippocrene Concise Dictionary   series and that is the work of Arnold R. Taylor.
I hope  that you will find something to suit you, if you do not find the stuff you want in W H Smith or other bookstore - Amazon will help - I am always extolling Amazon - people think I own shares - I do not !!! but they are very good servants of mine

Subject: [norse_course] Quick Hello and a question

Wanted to first do a quick introduction. My name is Bob. I
have been using the "Old Norse for Beginners" material for some time
now. What a great, well structured course. I'm not a language
person, but have been able to sucessfully (mostly) work my way
through it, and I'm now at lesson 7. Which brings me to the
question...
In a short time, I'll finish what is currently available
at the web site, and have been looking for a 'next step'. Could
anyone offer suggestions? I have been toying with the idea of
learning Icelandic, as that is supposed to be very close to Old
Norse, but wanted to get some feedback from those who have "been
there, done that" already. I must say that in my search thus far
I've been hoping to find something (either in Old Norse or Icelandic
instruction) as user freindly as the "Old Norse for Beginners"
course, but nothing seems to come close.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give, I look forward to
corresponding with you all.

Best Regards,
Bob

PS- I see a Njal's saga thread, which is great, I'm about 1/2 way
through that now (in English) and it will be awesome to see some of
the O.N. translations of it.
