Þórhildur gengur um beina og báru þær Bergþóra mat á borð. Þráinn Sigfússon
var starsýnn á Þorgerði Glúmsdóttur. Þetta sér kona hans, Þórhildur. Hún
reiðist og kveður til hans kviðling:

Thorhild manages hospitality ( waits table) and they (with) Bergthora, carry food to table.  Thrainn Sigfusson  was staring at Thorgerð Glumsdottir, his wife Thorhilð saw this and she becomes angry and speaks to him a ditty

"Era gapriplar góðir,

gægur er þér í augum,

Þráinn," segir hún.

Ogling is good (opp-sarcasm) there is lust in your eyes (says she)

if pl. Alan - then maybe it signifies something much repeated - in the past

Hann steig þegar fram yfir borðið og nefndi sér votta og sagði skilið við
Þórhildi "vil eg eigi hafa flimtan hennar né fáryrði yfir mér."

He stepped at once over the table and called/summoned witnesses for himself, and declared himself divorced from Thorhild   "I do not want he sarcasm and foul language over me"

Og svo var hann kappsamur um þetta að hann vildi eigi vera að veislunni nema
hún væri í braut rekin. Og það varð að hún fór í braut. Og nú sátu menn hver
í sínu rúmi og drukku og voru kátir.

And so (much) was he vehement/angry that he wished not to be at the feast unless she went away - and it happened that she (was sent?) went away and now people sat each one to his place and drank and were merry

Þá tók Þráinn til orða: "Ekki mun eg gera að launtali það sem mér býr í
skapi. Þess vil eg spyrja þig Höskuldur Dala-Kollsson, vilt þú gifta mér
Þorgerði frændkonu þína?"

Then Thrain took to speaking "I will not make secret what dwells in my mind/spirit, I wish to ask you Hoskuld Dale-Kol's Son would you wish to give to me in marriage your kinswoman Thorgerð

[I see a better rendering of Hoskuld's name as Hoskuld Kolsson - of the Dale]

"Eigi veit eg það," segir Höskuldur, "mér þykir þú lítt hafa við þessa
skilið er hefir þú áður átt eða hver maður er hann, Gunnar?"

"I do not know (of it) " says Hoskuld "seems to me you have but lately (little) separated from that one before - what sort of man is he (this one)  Gunnar?"

Hann svarar: "Eigi vil eg frá segja því að mér er maðurinn skyldur og seg þú
frá Njáll, því munu allir trúa."

He Replies "I do not wish to speak because he is close (kin) to me now you speak Njal - all will believe (what you say)

Njáll mælti: "Það er frá manni að segja að maður er vel auðigur að fé og ger
að sér um allt og hið mesta mikilmenni og megið þér fyrir því gera honum
kostinn."

Njal spoke  " From people it is to say that he is very rich in property and accomplished  in every way in himself; and is the most powerful of men, and for this you may give him the choice (right to choose)

Þá mælti Höskuldur: "Hvað sýnist þér ráð Hrútur frændi?"

Then spoke Hoskuld "What advice seems to you (here) Kinsman Hrut

Hrútur svaraði: "Gera mátt þú fyrir því kostinn að þetta er henni jafnræði."

Hrut replied  " you may give the choice - for it is an even match"

Þá tala þeir um kaupin og verða á allt sáttir.

They talked about/ discussed the marriage and all was decided

Stendur þá Gunnar upp og
Þráinn og ganga að pallinum. Spurði Gunnar þær mæðgur hvort þær vildu játa
þessum kaupum.

(Then) up stood Gunnar and Thrainn amd they walk to the Pall (dais). Gunnar asked them - Mother and Daughter - if they would "say yes" to this  bargain.

Þær kváðust eigi bregða mundu. Fastnaði Hallgerður Þorgerði

They declared of themselves that they would not oppose (it)

Hallgerð betrothed Thorgerd

dóttur sína. Þá var skipað konum í annað sinn. Sat þá Þórhalla meðal brúða

her daughter 

Then it was arranged the women were re-seated (and) Thorhalla sat between the two brides

(all this changing chairs - I do not think I have this down - rightly)

Fer nú boðið vel fram. Og er lokið var ríða þeir Höskuldur vestur en
Rangæingar til sinna heimila. Gunnar gaf mörgum góðar gjafar og virðist það
vel.

(Then) the Feast goes well  forward ( from then on) and when it was over they rode Hoskuld (and all his party) home Westwards and the Rang-River people to their homes.

Gunnar gave many good gifts  and was valued well  (was highly regarded )

Hallgerður tók við búráðum og var fengsöm og atkvæðamikil.

Hallgerð took over the household (it's management) amd was extravagant and bossy.  (So is that news already)

Þorgerður tók við
búráðum að Grjótá og var góð húsfreyja.

Thorgerð took to household management at Grjota (Stony) and was a good housewife.
