Gunnar took with (Tofi) to himself (took Tofi with him) and spoke to Kolskegg and Hallvarð
Now let us hold (course) for (the) Northern Lands

Þeir létu vel yfir því og báðu hann ráða.
They were well pleased over this and asked him to decide

Gunnar siglir úr Austurvegi með fé miklu. Hann hafði tíu skip og hélt þeim
til Heiðabæjar í Danmörk.
Gunnar sailed from the Eastern Route (Baltic) with a large amount of treasure. He had ten ships and held their course  for Hedeby  (? Heath Town) in Denmark

King Harald Gormsson was there (i.e. staying there/ in residence)
He was told of Gunnar and that there was not his equal in (all of ?) Iceland
the king sent his men to him to  invite him to come visit.

Gunnar fór þegar á
konungsfund. Konungur tók við honum vel og setti hann hið næsta sér. Þar var
Gunnar hálfan mánuð.
Gunnar went at once to meet the King (to the meeting of the King)
The King took to him (received him well) and set him next to his seat
Gunnar was there - (with the king) for half a month

Konungur hafði það að gamni að hann lét Gunnar reyna
ýmissar íþróttir við menn sína og voru þeir engir að né eina íþrótt hefðu
til jafns við hann.
The King had that for amusement/entertainment to have Gunnar essay divers feats(?sports)
against his own men (Z) and they were in not one accomplishment (Z) had equal with him
Konungur mælti til Gunnars: "Svo virðist mér sem óvíða muni þinn jafningi
fást."
The King said to Gunnar " It appears to me as if there may not be your equal (fást - to be seen/ found?)

Konungur bauð að fá Gunnari kvonfang og ríki mikið ef hann vildi þar
staðfestast
The King offered to  Gunnar a betrothal (to give him a wife ) and great power (G) if he would settle there.

Gunnar þakkaði konungi boð sitt og mælti: "Fara vil eg fyrst til Íslands að
finna vini mína og frændur."
Gunnar thanked the king for his offer and said "first I must go to Iceland and see my friends and kinsfolk

"Þá munt þú aldrei aftur koma til vor," segir konungur.
"Then you will never come back to Us "  (Royal "we")  says the king

"Auðna mun því ráða herra," segir Gunnar
"Fate must decide that Lord " says Gunnar
.

Gunnar gave the King a good longship and many other valuable things
that he had gained from harrying
The King gave Gunnar stately garments of his own and gloves decorated/embroidered with gold
and a headband (?likewise decorated?) and a Russian Hat (Fur perhaps)

Gunnar fór norður til Hísingar. Ölvir tók við honum báðum höndum. Hann færði
Ölvi skip sín og kallar það vera hans hlutskipti. Ölvir tók við fénu og kvað
Gunnar vera dreng góðan og bað hann vera þar nokkura hríð.
Gunnar travelled (sailed) Northwards to Hising, Olvir took him by both hands
(open-armed welcome) and Gunnar gave Olvir back his ships (and doubtless their contents)
and called that to be his share of the booty. Olvir accepted (took with - welcomed) the goods
and declared Gunnar to be  a good noble man , and to be there a while (invited him to stay)

Hallvarð asked Gunnar if he wanted to go see Earl Hakon. Gunnar said that was near to his spirit (heart)
"because now I have been somewhat tested (tried) but I was not when you asked me this (næstum used as adv) the last time" (G)

Then they prepared for their journey  and went North to Trondheim to see Eark Hakon
and he took well with Gunnar (big welcomes) and asked him to be with him for the winter

Gunnar virðist þar hverjum manni vel. Að jólum gaf jarl honum
gullhring.
Gunnar was respected/valued well by everyone. At Yule the Earl gave him a Gold ring

Gunnar lagði hug á Bergljótu frændkonu jarls og fannst það oft á
jarli að hann mundi hana hafa gifta honum ef Gunnar hefði nokkuð þess
leitað.
Gunnar became fond  of Bergljot a kinswoman of the Earl and it
often seemed that the Earl might have betrothed/given her in marriage
if Gunnar had wanted this (nokkud - in any way i.e. if he had but asked)

I would welcome any comments particularly on the underlined bits
Kveðja
