nothing much - BUT :-

gjalla v ( gellur; gall, gullu, gollið )

1. (hljóma) sound, resound
2. (skrækja) cry out
I got this from the  electronic dictionary and that is all I could get - I tried my dictionaries
not even CV could help
Excepting in the depths of the supplement I found goll-lauss meaning destitute of Gold
and Gollr  which is said to be a Hawk's Claw and is an artificial claw (do hawks need them )
perhaps it is a means of ID-ing a Hawk found injured - I am no Falconer - but I reckon they ring them now
and the Gollr might be made from Gold by this Gollnir (Purely UPG - is THAT)
Just a thought
Patricia
Using various vowels - different O's I got - Gall - bile - but that seems un-likely
Untill I tried Gull in the Electronic Dictionary and Got

gull n ( -s, -)

1. (málmur) gold
2. (skartgripur) jewellery
3. (gersemi) wonder, treasure
hann er ~ af manni
he is a fine character
4. pl toys
My eventual conclusions - purely UPG of course - is that a Gollnir - Gullnir - whatever - was a worker in Gold,  or else as we say - locally !! he id Golden - meaning that the spoken of - is a fine and noble character

WHEW !!

Thanks LN

Further questions:

Re: gollnir -I can´t find it in my dictionaries.

Re: á ráði – from the examples you give, it would suggest that the specific phrase á raði indicates that it is something in one´s make-up, or is one’s lot, rather than a deliberate decision, plan.

engi minn frændi – is this all nominative sg and thus some form of complex construction for the subject of the sentence?

Kveðja

Alan

The nominative singular would be 'gollnir', masculine long ja-stem
like 'hersir', 'hellir', etc.

> Skógverjar

Magnús Magnússon & Hermann Pálsson: "the men of Skogar"

> skorargeirs.
> 'Spear of Notches'

skorar, genitive singular.

> sá hlutur var á ráði hans

MM & HP: "he had one peculiarity" . I think it must be involuntary, a
condition rather than a plan. Zoega: 'ráð' (7) "state of life,
condition, lot". Hallgerðr later makes a lot of this later when she
wants to be insulting, e.g. to Bergþóra in Ch. 35: Þú hefir kartnagl á
hverjum fingri en hann er skegglaus. "You have a diseased nail on
every finger and he's beardless." Compare also Þorsteins þáttr
uxarfóts: Þó var mikill mállaki á ráði hennar. Hún hafði ekki mál og
var með því alin. "However she had a serious speech defect. She
lacked the power of speech and had been born like that." Looking on
Google, I found a similar expression current in Icelandic: sá var
ljóður/brestur á ráði hans "he had this fault"

> á leigustöðum.

MM & HP: "out on loan"

> og þótti mönnum því það ráð að þeir þreyttu það ekki með sér

MM & HP: "and he was persuaded not to try to fight it out." More
literally: "and men thought it advisable therefore that they didn't
disbute that [matter] between them." See Zoega 'ráð' (4) "wise
councel, what is advisable".

> Enda er sá engi minn frændi að gangi í þetta mál ef þú hefir eigi
þrek til.

MM & HP: "There is no one else in my familiy to undertake this claim
if you haven't the courage for it."
