Although the reflexive possessive adjective doesn't always refer to
the subject of its clause, I think in this instance 'sitt' "his" does
refer to Glum (see my comments for Alan): he carried on and followed
his own course of action. A couple of modern quotes I found on Google:

Ætla ég því að bregða á ráð sem margur bloggarinn hefur gert en það er
að hafa hér getraun.
"So I'm going to do as many bloggers have done and have a quiz here."

En ættum við að bregða á ráð frænda vorra; Dana?"
"But should we pursue the same course of action as our cousins the Danes?
