Grace said it was very mercantile stuff this marriage business - well she said rightly in my opinion.
But if it WAS so mercantile why does he ask to be a Son-in-Law
 Makes sense ??

2. kafli

Það var einu hverju sinni að þeir bræður riðu (past)til alþingis, Höskuldur og

Hrútur. Þar var

It was on a certain time that those brothers ride to (the) Althing, H and H.

There were

great numbers of men.

Þá ræddi (past) Höskuldur við Hrút: "Það vildi (past) eg bróðir að þú bættir (past subj)ráð þitt og

bæðir (subj) þér

Then H speaks with H.," I wish it, brother, that you better your condition

(Z) and ask for you a wife."

 konu."

Hrútur svarar: "Lengi hefir mér það í hug verið (been) og hefir mér þó tvennt um

sýnst. En nú

H. answers, "Long has it to me in mind to happen and (there) has to me

seemed (to be) nevertheless two (sides in the matter). (Z)  But now

vil eg gera að þínu skapi eða hvar skulum við (we) á leita (look)?"

I will do (according) to your mind, but where shall (I) try?"

Höskuldur svaraði: "Hér eru nú höfðingjar margir á þingi og er gott um að

velja en þó

H. answered, "Here are now many chieftains at (the) Thing and is plenty of

(women)to

Choose (from) but nevertheless

hefi eg í einum stað (in one respect) á stofnað (arranged) fyrir þína hönd (on your behalf). Kona heitir Unnur og er

dóttir Marðar (gen of Mörðr)

I have in certain ?? to make for your hand. (The) woman is called Unn and is

(the) daughter of Mordar

gígju, hins vitrasta manns, og er hann hér á þingi og svo dóttir hans og

mátt þú nú sjá

fiddle, the most wise a man and he is here at (the) Thing and so his

daughter and may you now see

 hana ef þú vilt."

her if you wish."

Og annan dag eftir (the day after) er menn gengu til lögréttu sáu þeir konur úti hjá

Rangæingabúð, vel

And another day after when men went to (the) law place, they saw women out

near (the) booth (of the) Rangæ, well dressed?

búnar.

Þá mælti Höskuldur við Hrút: "Þar er hún nú Unnur er eg sagði þér frá eða

hversu líst þér

Then spoke H with H, "There she is now, Unn, (of) whom I spoke to you, how

is pleasing to you about her?"

á hana?"

"Vel," sagði hann, "en eigi veit eg hvort við eigum heill saman."

"Well," said he, "but I know not whether we (shall) live happily (Z)

together."

Síðan ganga þeir til lögréttu. Mörður gígja mælti lögskil að vanda sínum og

gekk heim til

Afterwards they go to the law place.  Mordr fiddle spoke his pleadings as

prescribed in the law (Z) and went home to

búðar sinnar. Höskuldur stóð upp og Hrútur og gengu til búðar Marðar og inn

í búðina.

his booth.  H stood up and H (as well) and (they) went to Mordr's booth and

into the booth.

Mörður sat í innanverðri búðinni. Þeir kvöddu hann. Hann stóð upp í mót (‘in a meeting’)

þeim og tók í

M sat in (the) innermost (part) of the booth.  They greeted him.  He stood

up in turn (and greeted) them and took H by

hönd Höskuldi og settist hann niður hjá honum en Hrútur sat hið næsta

Höskuldi.

(the) hand and seats him down beside him but Hrut sat the next to Hoskuld.

Síðan töluðu þeir margt og komu þar niður ræður (I think this is the subject) Höskulds að "eg mæli til

kaupa (I think this is plural noun) við þig.

Afterwards they talked much and came there down to H.'s discussion, "I speak

to make a bargain with you.

Vill Hrútur gerast mágur þinn og kaupa (buy - very mercantile business this marriage stuff) dóttur þína og skal eg eigi mitt til

spara."

H wants to be your son-in-law and marry your daughter and I shall (for my

part)not (be) sparing in the matter. (Z)

Mörður svaraði: "Veit eg að þú ert höfðingi mikill en bróðir þinn er mér

ókunnigur."

M. answered, I know that your are a great chief but your brother is to me

unknown."
