LM:

It's no problem. I'm only glad to find out about general interest in
the songs like the Ormurin langi from Thora's posts, etc., because
I'm not exactly tapped into Norse/Asatru type community.

I am assuming that the English translation of the the Regin,
Brynhild and Høgni you are referring to are E.M. Smith-Dampier's
translation in _SIGURD THE DRAGON-SLAYER_.

Bear in mind that Smith=Dampier's is based on the recensions
in Jóannes Patursson's _Kvæðabók_, and will differ somewhat from
Hammershaimb's transcriptions.

Patursson vs. Hammershaimb
--------------------------

Patursson's "Regin smiður" (Sigurd cycle part I) begins similarly,
but the second strophe reads:

>2. Sigmund so nevni eg
>tann Vølsungsson,

You can find this version online though, and a copy of it is
available somewhere on my site.

Though I also own photocopies of other Sigurd cycle ballads from
Patursson's book, but I don't think I have time now to transcribe
them in their entirety.

Patursson's "Brynhildar" (Sigurd cycle part II) is 232 strophes (vs.
238 strophes in Hammershaimb's ver.) and the first discrepancy
occurs on

>4.
>kallast Brynhild Buðla dóttir
>tað ynniliga sprund

Patursson's Høgni (Sigurd cycle part III) 231 strophes and begins

>1. Guðrun situr í Gjúkagørðum,

Recorded music
--------------

I should also note that performed versions don't necessarily follow
these texts (or the order in which the verses are sung) exactly as
in printed texts you might obtain.

For example, in the refrain that is common to the Sigurd Cycle
ballads, the line that runs

>brá hann sínum brandi av reiði "Wielding his brand of rage"

is, as best as I can make out, is being sung as "Sjúrður sving hann
svørdi av reiði" (Sjurdur he swings(?) the sword with rage), or
something like that in the "Traditional Music in the Faroe Islands
1950 - 1999" CD (http://www.tutl.com/webshop/index.php?
productID=56).
