Yeah, First Steps is pretty good (though I suppose I've never really cared for Language Lesson lay outs in which they give you vocabulary with unexplained grammatical features and explain it later on.

Is the Beowulf title simply "A Student's Beowulf"? It sounds very helpful!

And I just thought I'd happily announce that I swathed through an ungodly mob today to get to Barnes and Nobles to pick up my long awaited S. Pollington's "Wordcraft." It's a bonified MnEnglish to Old English dictionary with references at the end of definitions that signify to which Wordlist the word belongs (the 2nd half of the book are various wordlists). It's really fun, though it foregoes most of the important info for things like special noun class membership and simply gives the gender (and doesn't make reference to irregularities within verbs). A worth-while buy, though; and, I'm sure that it would be helpful in referencing Old Norse words to a degree since I can't imagine the OE vocab being to different from the ON vocab (or not?...)
Thank you, Merry Christmas (God Geol!)

Been studying Anglo-Saxon for last year.  Two helpful books in addition to ones mentioned are Steven Pollington's First Steps in Old English and A Student's Beowulf which is gives a line by line gloss of the poem.

Best, Andy

summaries and reading selection, but not quite the "step-by-step"
grammar I've been looking for).

Hey Justin,

Sweet's A-S Primer is very cheap at the moment second-hand on
amazon.uk [
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0198111789/qid=1135280682/sr
=1-2/ref=sr_1_0_2/026-3840711-5991616 ]. Not quite as cheap at
amazon.com [ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0198111789/103-7310813-
1661416?v=glance&n=283155 ].

Likewise the Reader, pretty cheap second-hand at both sites:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/019811169X/qid=1135281139/sr=1-
1/ref=sr_1_1/103-7310813-1661416?s=books&v=glance&n=283155

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/019811169X/qid=1135281239/sr
=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-3937718-9716605

Both sites allow you to look inside either book, even search for
words in it! There is an unspecified page limit, but I've found it
to be quite generous with other books I've looked at.
