Larry I believe your understanding may be perfectly correct, but the  difference of opinion with translating FROM English into OLD NORSE arose some time ago when I was told that this was frowned upon (no reason being given) this was applied to the use of Old Norse fir the writing of Current
English Texts - letters personal Notes etc.
The original "argument" arose from just that, it had nothing whatever to do with keeping pure the Icelandic language (which I applaud) because that equates with the Keeping German German, which was started by Kaiser Wilhelm, and it did involve the use of such words as Fernseher for Television, so the Modern Icelanders may want to do the same, good - more power to them
My original post which I have marked in red at the foot of the page on red, was intended to be a simple compliment to Mr. Arthur for his Scholarship and a rebuttal of the person who said that "translating from ENGLISH into OLD NORSE was frowned upon in Academic Circles  (like I care what the Academic Circles think)
I think I shall now retire from this corresponence, since my original post has been misquoted and thoroughly midunderstood .
I shall sit back and wait for Alan to return with some more of the translations from the Saga of Hrafnkel Freyr's Goði    ....... Whew ..... I think it should be clear now
Kveðja and God Jul everyone

My understanding is that modern Icelanders want to try to keep the language pure
and avoid loan words from English and other languages. Somebody correct me if
I've gotten this wrong, but rather than some phonetic version of "telefone",
they prefer to come up with a compound word in Icelandic that would translate as
"far-talker" or some such.

As far as finding equivalents in Icelandic for common English words, I don't see
what that would be a problem.
