I have adopted the former meaning in my translation as it makes more sense.

Yes well it does doen's it , but it did not stop me tripping up over it.
and I've noticed a tendency for the knowledge I have of German to assist me in tripping up over some of the old Icelandic
Your comments on using a Dictionary of Modern Icelandic, occasionally, can you please explain Alan for I am interested, how do the Old and Modern Icelandic relate to each other, -  are they THAT close please.
Thanks for the help

Sæl Patricia

This appears quite good overall. Most of my comments relate to very minor things. The last line seems to have caused you a bit of difficulty so I hope my explanation is of help.

Auðun sagði, 'Gaf hann mér leðrhosu fulla af silfri

Auðun said "gave he to me leatherpouch full of silver

Auðun said "he gave me a leather bag full of Silver"   (pouch or bag seems good)

ok kvað mik þá eigi félausan, ef ek helda því,

and told/declared to me that [then] not penniless if I held (to) this [’mik’ is accusative here which, to me, suggests that the declation is about me rather than to me, ie ’(he) declared me then not (to be) penniless’.]

and he told me I would not be penniless if I held on to this (bag)

þó at skip mitt bryti við Ísland.' Konungr sagði: 'Þat var ágætliga gört,

even that ship (while - mitt - in the middle of) [mitt = nom sg neut of ’minn’, ’my’] be wrecked reaching Iceland  King said "that was excellently paid [literally, done, or made, ie the act of rewarding Auðun]"

Even though the ship might be wrecked whilst reaching Iceland  The King Said "that was very well paid"   (rewarded)- better ?

ok þat mynda ek ekki gört hafa: lauss mynda ek þykkjask, ef ek gæfa þér skipit.

and that would I not paid [done, or made] have, free would I have seemed(sk) [thought myself] if I gave to you the ship + def art (?) [yes]

and I would not have given you that, I would have felt free of obligation if I had given you the ship

Hvárt launaði hann fleira?' 'Svá var víst, herra', segir Auðun,

Can it be ( Hvart -introducing a diect question) Rewarded he (even) more "In this way certainly Lord" says Auðun

Well did he give you anything else. "Yes lord he certainly did with this"   says Auðun (showing the Arm-ring)

'at hann launaði: hann gaf mér hring þenna, er ek hefi á hendi,

that he rewarded  - he gave to me this ( acc.m.sing) (very) ring  that I (wear)/have on my hand

he did reward, he gave me this very ring that I am wearing (now) upon my hand / arm (well it is an Arm ring) [yes, and hönd can me the arm just as much as the hand]

ok kvað svá mega at berask, at ek týnda fénu öllu, ok sagði mik þá eigi félausan,

and told (me) [implicit only ie not in the text]  thus I can (even) happen to [literally ’(it) may happen that I...’] lose [the] wealth (all/total) and [’said me then (to be)’ as above]still not penniless

and he told me even if it happened that I lost all the wealth in total I would still not be entirely penniless

ef ek ætta hringinn, ok bað mik eigi lóga,

if I owned Ring (+ def Art - inn) the,  and bade me not part with (it)

if I kept the ring, and he bade me not to part with it

nema ek ætta nökkurum tignum manni svá gott at launa, at ek vilda gefa.

unless I knew of a certain noble man thus good to reward so that I am willing to give. ætta seems 2 meanings to have or to know i.e. you cannot own a person, (is have a better word in any case.?) [in this case, I think the meaning of ’eiga’ is ’to have a duty to, must” (see Gordon’s glossary) and the ’gott’ is the good deed that the noble man has done which should be rewarded (see comments below). Thus this clause translates literally as ’unless I have a duty to reward some noble man thus (for) a good (deed)’]

Unless I knew of a certain Noble Man to whom I was obliged (he deserved the ring) and I was willing to give it to him

This clause is the same as appeared in Section 19, which was : ‘Nema þú þykkisk eiga svá mikit gott at launa nökkurum göfgum manni’ . As I said in my translation of this section, I found in my moden Icelandic dictionary that launa is a verb with two objects in the pattern (dat + acc) launa e-m e-t (reward somebody [dat] for something [acc]). On the other hand Gordon suggests that it has potentially three objects in the pattern (dat + acc + dat) launa e-m e-t e-u (reward somebody [dat] with something [acc] for something [dat]) but Gordon’s gloss seems to indicate that the accusative object is the thing being given as a reward rather than the reason for the reward. This has a significant impact on the meaning of the clause in Auðun, because the accusative object in this case ‘gott’ (an adjective used as a noun) would be the reason for the reward (ie a nobleman´s earlier good deed) iaw the first gloss but the thing being rewarded (ie a good object such as the ring is) if we follow Gordon. I have adopted the former meaning in my translation as it makes more sense.

I have tried to "get inside" the text Alan  and I had trouble with these "at's" and with ætta but Gordon seemed to give two meanings .

And I have gone through your corrections that I'd queried, given that I already had the Idea I'd got my wires crossed I soon made sense of it, thanks for your patience
