Sæl Patricia

Haven´t these latest sections been good for gaining an understanding of the use of the subjunctive!

Sael Alan the more I do of this work the more I like it

Ok er leið stund ok skipit var albúit,

and In the course of time (in a while) [literally: and when passed a time and] the ship was all made ready

In a while the ship was entirely ready

þá mælti Sveinn konungr við Auðun: 'Þó villtu nú á braut, þá mun ek nú ekki letja þik.

then spoke Sweinn the King with Auðun Though you want to go [implicit] away, then must [will] I [now] not hinder thee (sing.)

Though you want to go away now, I shall not dissuade you

En þat hefi ek spurt, at ilt er til hafna fyrir landi yðru, ok eru víða ørœfi ok hætt skipum.

but that I have been told(from spyrja [yes, the result of asking is that you learn or get told!]) badly is your Country for a harbour (harbours, plural), [and] all open coast and danger [literally: (the) harbourless coasts are wide and dangerous/destructive] to ships

But I have heard that your Country is poorly off for a harbour, it's coatline is open and dangerous to ships

This is where I got a bit mixed up I think Sweinn is trying to warn him

Nú brýtr þú ok týnir skipinu ok fénu,

Now should (? Subj [yes, I think both verbs, brjóta and týna, are subj]) you crash and lose the ship and the goods / wealth

Now if you crashed and lost the Ship and all the goods

lítt sér þat þá á, at þú hafir fundit Svein konung ok gefit honum gorsimi.'

little for oneself (?dat) [no, impers. literally: little (will be) seen that then, or reordered: that will be little seen then), not sure why sér is not subj]  that thou hast (sing) [and subj!] met Sweinn the King and gave [given, past participle] him a Treasure ('sing)

Little you would have to show you had met King Sweinn and gave him a treasure

Síðan (seldi) konungr honum leðrhosu fulla af silfri, '

after that (from Selja) The King [gave, presented] to him (dat? [yes]) a leathern pouch very full with [why not ’of’ as in your literal translation?] silver

because of that, the King Presented (I prefer that) him with a leathern pouch all full of silver

Sweinn is the Master of the Grand Gesture

ok ertu þá enn eigi félauss með öllu, þótt þú brjótir skipit, ef þú fær haldit (?subj [no, past participle]) þessu.

and wouldst [will be, present tense indicative used as simple future sense] thou then [still] not be penniless withal (allr - öllu) [you seem to have missed ”even though you wreck (subj in concessive ’þótt’ clause) the ship’]if  thou fast [are able to, fær = 2nd pers sing indic of fá] hold to this

you would not be penniless is all was lost so you held on to this

lost again [you or Auðun´s ship and property?]

Verða má svá enn', segir konungr, 'at þú týnir þessu fé:

Happen to be able (?) this way moreover [literally: (it) may still be thus] says the king that thou lost [lose, pres indic] this money also (implied)

It might still happen moreover says the King that you could lose this  money as well

lítt nýtr þú þá þess, er þú fant Svein konung ok gaft honum gørsimi'

little use [will benefit, pres indic in future sense] to thee [you, nominative] then this [from that], since [when] thou hadst met Sveinn the King and gave to him a treasure

little use would this be to you to say you met King Sweinn and gave him a Treasure

I see  Gorsimi as  - A treasure, for there was but one Bear, and I tend to hang on to the Old forms of thou and thee and the hadst etc.. I want it seen that I know my sing from my Pl.

I would like this niðing machine to do things in the color I want.

Patricia  I think he is getting yet another gift
