Sonu þína ok dotr skulum vit í brott leysa með minni forsjá
We shall find places in my patronage for your sons and daughters

ok efla þau svá, at þau mætti fá góða kosti af því. Ok allt,
and support them so that they may have good opportunities. And all

er þú veizt í mínum hirzlum vera ok þú þarft at hafa heðan af,
that you know to be in my possession and that you need to have henceforward,

þá skaltu mér til segja ok eigi fyrir skart sitja heðan af
then you must tell me and not live in need of (anything) henceforward

um þá hluti, sem þú þarft at hafa.
in all respects, as you need to have.

Skaltu búa, meðan þér þykkir gaman at,
You shall dwell, in the meantime, as you please,

en fara þá hingat, er þér leiðisk.
but go then hither, if you grow tired of it.

Mun ek þá annask þik til dauðadags.
I will then provide for you to the day of your death.

Skulum vit þá vera sáttir. Vil ek þess vænta,
We shall be then be even (reconciled). I will expect this,

at þat mæli fleiri, at sjá maðr sé vel dýrr.'
that it ? speak ?more, to see the man (Einarr) is (considered) very dear.

'Ek vil eigi þennan kost', segir Þorbjõrn.
I don’t want any of your help,” said Þorbjõrn.

'Hvern viltu þá?' segir Hrafnkell.
“What do you want?” said Hrafenkell.

Þá segir Þorbjõrn: 'Ek vil, at vit takim menn til gørðar með okkr.'
Then Þorbjõrn said: “I want, that you choose arbitrators for us.”

Hrafnkell svarar: 'Þá þykkisk þú jafnmenntr mér,
Hrafenkell answered: “Then you think (you are) equal to me,

ok munum vit ekki at því sættask.'
and we will not by that be reconciled.”

Þá reið Þorbjõrn í brott ok ofan eptir Hrafnkelsdal.
Then Þorbjõrn rode away and down behind Hrafnkelsdal.

Hann kom til Laugarhúsa ok hittir Bjarna, bróður sinn,
He came to Laugarhúsa and called on Bjarna, his brother,

ok segir honum þessi tíðendi, biðr,
and told him of these tiding, asking ? ,

at hann muni nõkkurn hlut í eiga um þessi mál.
that he would (participate?) in certain respects in the claim at this time.

Bjarni kvað eigi sitt jafnmenni við at eiga, þar er Hrafnkell er.
Bjarni said he was not equal to sit with the claim, there where
Hrafnkell was.

'En þó at vér stýrim penningum miklum,
“Even though we have much money of our own,

þá megum vér ekki deila af kappi við Hrafnkel,
we cannot contend with Hrafnkell,

ok er þat satt, at sá er svinnr, er sik kann.
and have it be reconciled, for he is wise who knows himself.

Hefir hann þá marga málaferlum vafit,
He(Hrafnkell) has entangled many people in lawsuits

er meira bein hafa í hendi haft en vér.
who have more bone in their hands – are more powerful - than we.

Sýnisk mér þú vitlítill við hafa orðit,
It appears to me you have little good sense ??

er þú hefir svá góðum kostum neitat.
that you have denied (refused) such good conditions

Vil ek mér hér engu af skipta.'
I won’t have anything to do with it.
