I have finally finished my latest (and last - for a while)
independent writing attempt based upon the vocabulary of
lessons 1 through 9. It is, as usual, down below as an
attachment (just click on it). The lessons have been an
excellent initial introduction to Old Norse. I wish there
were more of them. Again, I encourage beginners, such as
myself, to post some of their own attempts. It is typical
to utilize translation to and from the native language as
a means of facilitating the study of a foreign language.
Independent writing is as effective as it is difficult.
The effort forces one to attempt to think in the target
language - which is, after all, typically, the very goal
of study. The exercise also provides one with a reason to
write and write as well as possible. As a minimum, the
exercise will provide additional reading material for your
peers to struggle through. Old Norse is, presently, an
inchoate course of study. Any student of a "living language"
or of an archaic language, such as Greek or Latin, that has
a mature educational tradition is aware of this fact. As
such, Old Norse lacks suitable material for study by
beginners. Through the individual efforts of beginners,
in conjunction with this discussion group, we could offer
assistance to each other. Of course, there are risks
involved.
