Hi Mark!

Glad to see from your last post that you haven't left us! I'm not sure if
anyone has directly responded to your question
... How do I learn this language from the basics?

I found the best way was to start with Haukur's lessons
www.hi.is/~haukurth/norse/olessons
where he explains the grammar in a very user-friendly way and introduces the
terminology for describing language. I know many English-speaking people
have never been taught the grammar of their own language, let alone of
another language. When I asked my teenagers (all of whom are bright and
plan on going to university) what an adjective is, they looked at me
blankly. They simply had never been taught it at school!

The terminology is really quite easy to pick up and I find it easier to
apply to Old Norse because the form of the word usually makes it clear
whether it is a noun or adverb etc, whereas in English words tend to remain
relatively unchanged. Take a simple word like "hit" for example...
she hit the table
it's a hit!
the hit song
Here we have apparently the same word performing three different functions!
But in ON the forms of the words would be quite different and so more easily
recognisable for what they are!

Hope this makes sense and good luck with your studies!
KveĆ°ja,

Sarah.
