So, on a practical level, how can someone with Word 97 (in my case) actually go about READING something in UTF-8, please?

(It's me who has the problem!)

It's not exactly garbled - it's encoded with UTF-8 
rather than the more commonly used ISO-8859-1. 
 
I suggest to list members that they use Latin-1 but 
it's a free Internet and Unicode is not actually a
bad cause - so to each his own, I guess.
